I have been wondering. When GTA first came out (back in 1998 I think?) it was ground breaking. It caused massive controversy. I distinctly remember you got a bonus for killing Hare Krishnas!
Then GTA2 came out. Then it was more of the same but with slightly better graphics. Gameplay was still top down style.
We also had a number of spin offs that didn't really offer much in the way of originality anymore.
Then we were hit with GTA3. We weren't expecting it, it just smacked us in the face with a HUGE free roaming city (same as GTA, but bigger) Massive amounts of cars to steal and sell to the car crusher. Also had Fireman Police and ambulance missions that you could complete anytime you wanted to earn a little extra cash for weapons and such. You could also hire a "Lady of the Night" and your health would benefit from a decent increase in size. There many other things, but I'd be here all day listing them.
After that we had Vice City. Once again WHAM!! Smacked in the face with a game series that we thought couldn't get ay better. In VC We saw motorbikes introduced a choice of 5 bikes (although 2 were really the same, just looked a little different). We also had helicopters (including the incredible Hunter  ) we were also given changing costumes, a bigger city and also Assets. Assets (nightclub, Cherry poppers etc) provided you with a constant reliable source of money. We also had some of the funniest radio I have ever heard along with some fantastic 80's tunage. Including Michael Jackson, Ozzy Osbourne and Twisted Sister.
Then the big one came. San Andreas. I for one was certainly not expecting this to be as big as it was. We had all the good things from VC and GTA3 plus more. Now you needed to look after your character (CJ). You also needed to style him in clothes, hair and tattoos. On top of that he needed feeding! You also had to keep him fit otherwise you risk getting a heart attack.
It seemed Rockstar jumped on the modifying band wagon as well. Allowing you to modify almost every car in the came with nitrous and bodykits.
The amount of vehicles available is unbelievable now. You have cars, bikes, lorries, trucks, tractors, combine harvesters, hovercraft, go-karts, push bikes, monster trucks, aeroplanes, helicopters, a jetpack, tanks and boats. I'm sure I have forgotten some. That should give you a good idea though.
Now the city was no longer one city. There were three. Los Santos, Las Venturas and San Fierro. In between these three cities we have miles and miles of countryside and desert. A rumour appeared that it took 30 minutes to drive from one end of the map to the other! I have given up driving anyway and take a plane or helicopter!
There is a huge list of other things available to you on SA but that would take too long!
I won't go on about Liberty City Stories, as there isn't really anything massively unique about it. Its just a rebadged GTA3.
Right and now to my point.
After all this, what is there left for Rockstar to do? I know it seemed impossible to top VC, but they did. Now it seems impossible to top SA. Will they do it?
If you think they can, let us know how! :D
