: What next for Grand Theft Auto?

I have been wondering. When GTA first came out (back in 1998 I think?) it was ground breaking. It caused massive controversy. I distinctly remember you got a bonus for killing Hare Krishnas!
Then GTA2 came out. Then it was more of the same but with slightly better graphics. Gameplay was still top down style.
We also had a number of spin offs that didn't really offer much in the way of originality anymore.

Then we were hit with GTA3. We weren't expecting it, it just smacked us in the face with a HUGE free roaming city (same as GTA, but bigger) Massive amounts of cars to steal and sell to the car crusher. Also had Fireman Police and ambulance missions that you could complete anytime you wanted to earn a little extra cash for weapons and such. You could also hire a "Lady of the Night" and your health would benefit from a decent increase in size. There many other things, but I'd be here all day listing them.

After that we had Vice City. Once again WHAM!! Smacked in the face with a game series that we thought couldn't get ay better. In VC We saw motorbikes introduced a choice of 5 bikes (although 2 were really the same, just looked a little different). We also had helicopters (including the incredible Hunter  ) we were also given changing costumes, a bigger city and also Assets. Assets (nightclub, Cherry poppers etc) provided you with a constant reliable source of money. We also had some of the funniest radio I have ever heard along with some fantastic 80's tunage. Including Michael Jackson, Ozzy Osbourne and Twisted Sister.

Then the big one came. San Andreas. I for one was certainly not expecting this to be as big as it was. We had all the good things from VC and GTA3 plus more. Now you needed to look after your character (CJ). You also needed to style him in clothes, hair and tattoos. On top of that he needed feeding! You also had to keep him fit otherwise you risk getting a heart attack.
It seemed Rockstar jumped on the modifying band wagon as well. Allowing you to modify almost every car in the came with nitrous and bodykits.
The amount of vehicles available is unbelievable now. You have cars, bikes, lorries, trucks, tractors, combine harvesters, hovercraft, go-karts, push bikes, monster trucks, aeroplanes, helicopters, a jetpack, tanks and boats. I'm sure I have forgotten some. That should give you a good idea though.
Now the city was no longer one city. There were three. Los Santos, Las Venturas and San Fierro. In between these three cities we have miles and miles of countryside and desert. A rumour appeared that it took 30 minutes to drive from one end of the map to the other! I have given up driving anyway and take a plane or helicopter!
There is a huge list of other things available to you on SA but that would take too long!

I won't go on about Liberty City Stories, as there isn't really anything massively unique about it. Its just a rebadged GTA3.

Right and now to my point.
After all this, what is there left for Rockstar to do? I know it seemed impossible to top VC, but they did. Now it seems impossible to top SA. Will they do it?
If you think they can, let us know how! :D

If you really wanna know then its actually quite cool..

Roxstar are building up gta san andreas online (game title to be confirmed)
Each person you play is an actual person somewhere in the world.
There intention is to get on one map 3000 people, you will be able to build busniess's and trade with each other. you are suposed to be either a cop or a theiving scum. you buy the online identity from retailers and top up your playtime monthly
Its coming only on the ps3 and will have the same engines and servers space as WOW. This will be broadband only play.

The title, usability, number of players, story board is all to be confirmed but the cost is the main problem i think, roxstar will need to invest most available funds to get it right.

This is un-confirmed info from someone responsible for a small part of gtasan.

Oh if you ride a BMX accross gta san andreas you'll take about 24 hours !!

No offence Katch mate but Blizzard has not licensed the WoW game engine to anyone - so the next GTA will not use this technology.

Sorry,

Pete

I want an online player mode with real citys, think about, you and 10 of your mates can go on a crime spree co-op in New York or London, or you can be the police trying to stop your mates :hyper:

From what I've heard they are ditching the GTA 3 engine cos its been used to death with the trilogy and using an all new GTA 4 engine, with a european town in mind, thats all i know at the mo.

The worst one ever was GTA London 1969, just terrible compared.

I would like to see a real-time option too, that would bring the game to a whole new level. Also making things like the car dealers (and the hookers  ) more interactive so you could go in and buy a car - or still just smash the window and steal it!

Stuff like the train driver feature could be expanded too so you had the option the drive freight from, say a ship in a dock, to where ever it was needed instead of just racing between stations.

I like the sound of the online game with real players, but if they did that cheats and stuff are bound to waste the effect - that and you'll never want to leave the house again!

indeed SA is damn good game but the storyline does get a bit silly for my tastes.
