Quake 4 is very good, didn't like it to start with but got really into it. You do need a quite a powerful PC though to play it at it's best. Very arcady though, doesn't require the same sort of tactics you need in games like COD2 and BF2.

If you're after a Real Time Strategy game, I thought Civilisation IV would have been great, hoping to re-live the dream that was the original game. Unfortunately, I hate it. Steer clear in my opinion.

Age of Empires 3 is supposed to be very good, but owing to laziness on the part of the programmers, it won't install on a Windows 2000 system (not without hacking and patching and stuff), so I'm out on that one.

I do like Empire Earth 2 though, on that front.

As for Space combat sims, you can't go far wrong with X3: Reunion.

I got Battlefield 2, but I must say, I much preferred the original. I don't play either now.

Half Life and Half Life 2 are both stunning FPS games.

As far as in-depth 3d space sims with a storyline and trading goes, it's the best there is at the moment.

The major major downside, is that it's single-player only. But if that's what you want, then you can't go wrong.

It's been patched a couple of times (as with all games these days) to alleviate a couple of the little glitches.

EVE is sort of space thing with online play, is it not? Not heard a lot about it, I spend too much time with the idiots on World of Warcraft :s

Need For Speed Most Wanted is good too
Unreal Tournament 2004 is good for fast paced FPS
urr... Grand Theft Auto of any variety

I put a vote in for World of Warcraft. So ok it costs about 8 quid a month to play it - but how many games do you still play every day a year after buying?

Very addictive.

If you get HL2, it means you also get Counter Strike (CS), CS:Condition Zero and CS:Source.

And then you can join one of the many UK servers/clans and play. Maybe you can even play with us at 187clan.co.uk?

the original half life is a must have for any true gamer and their are assorted mods out there which can give the graphics a bit of a polish.

If you want an absolutely amazing driving sim buy GTR, nothing quite so scary as flogging a 550 Ferrari round Spa at night with it pouring rain! Talk about making you focus!

Cheers

On another note to GTR, get GTL as well

Same game engine and realism but with 60s to 70s cars its great!

Just recently bought both these games and got to say they are pretty good. But don't expect to just go blasting round the track like it's need for speed, these are sims and can be real ***** to drive. There's not a bad online community for both of these games either, but there is usually only people in the Simulation sector of GTR rather than Semi, or Arcade. This makes for some tricky drivng, in fact forget it unless you've got a steering wheel and pedals, trying to feather the accelerator of a 600Bhp viper is not easy with digital buttons.

GT Legends seems a bit more fun, the racing is also a bit closer online.

even though i also have just got a new pc ive found myslef playing some older games more then splashing out on newer titles. so far i would say this year ive playeed rollercoaster tycoon 2 more then half life 2.

although silent hunter 3 with rub installed requires a lot of time and effort to get rewards from.

I can recomend GT Legends and or GTR, racing car sims, with varying degrees of simulation (depending how true to life you want it). GTR was the first one, all LeMan style cars, and GT Legends is the new one, classic car racing little Mini Coopers (proper ones), Lotus Cortinas, all sorts. I prefer GT Legends and the online racing is good fun, although there are a few people who spoil it by purposfully hitting your rear end on a corner.

Just bought a cheapo steering wheel and pedals to try out, see if it improves my skills (very difficult keeping old of a 600Bhp viper without traction control using a digital pad).

Would certainly recomend GT Legends, GTR could be a bit TOO simulationy.

Buy Battlefield 2 and Special Forces. These will be all you'll ever need.

I've so far "invested" (in total) two weeks of my life. No regrets!!
