: Rovers in Australia?

Anyone know if there are many second hand Rovers kicking about in Oz?

Going to Tasmania for a few years in April, I'd love it if I could get a Rover 214 mk2 over there (sad I know, but there you go).

Moved to the forum for the area.

Can definately get the MkII 200. Whether you will get a 214 is a different matter. Certainly there are some 220 turbo's and some Coupe Turbo's about.

Brilliant!

I passed my test last February (late starter at 29) and am on my second mark2 214.

Nippy cars for the size of engine.

Hate to break this to you but I'd say old Rover 200s are extremely rare in Oz - I'm from Sydney and have never ever seen one, ever. So I wouldn't know what it'd be like in Tassie.

See, Rover cars were imported into Oz officially up until the early 1990s, and then resumed when the MGF came out (Range Rover/Land Rover have always been sold during the lapse), and then the 75. The last cars that were brought in before that were the 1st generation 400s (aka 4-door Honda Integras, as Honda only sold Integra coupes), and you see the occasional 800 series on the street. But 200s were never imported I don't think, mainly because Honda sold the Japan-built concerto here and I guess the importer couldn't justify selling a similar car at higher prices. So we've never seen the 200 series in any generation officially. The closest we got to was getting the ZR, just before the fateful event in April last year, and so the stock that arrived in our shores were auctioned off, so you might find a few of them here. I have seen a 600-series near the gym I frequent, but i"m sure that's a private import.

Probably a different story in NZ because they've always sold Rover cars there.

200 was never went through ADR, only the ZR in late 04, this would mean there are no 214 unless they have been imported through a low exemption chanel. **** loads in NZ though!

as epson said the 200 series of any flavour has never been imported into Australia. Bad luck there. During the Rover/Honda years Rover sale collapsed completely and they stopped importing them altogether. A shame when Rover sold very well with the SD1, but the public didn't accept Rovers which were either re-skinned Hondas made in England (series 1 800) or in the case of what was sold here as the 416 Vitesse - a 100% genuine made in Japan Honda Integra.

Rovers are pretty thin on the ground in Tasmania as for much of the P4 era there were no dealers here. I would estimate that there are than 10 modern Rovers in all of Tasmania - all 75s. There are some MGFs and a few Tfs and one ZR160 but other than that if you want a Rover in Tasmania it will be a classic (P6, P5 or possibly SD1.) or a Honda in drag (Quintet). Again these are also rare.

Where in Tasmania are you moving to and what for? As far as I know I'm .org's only Tasmanian member and I'm in Hobart.

Stu - not sure which Tasmania you're thinking of here but the one I'm in is part of Australia, not New Zealand. NZ got all those cars, we didn't. Sure we're near neighbours, but near is a relative term.... you're close to Germany than we are to NZ.

There are a few New Zealanders on Rovertech with them, and they have mentioned a few times of friends with MkII's in Australia.

My cousin is near Melbourne and had a MkII 220 GTi Turbo a few years back. Came in via Japan.

But I guess they would be like a needle in a haystack.

Thanks to everyone who has replied to my message, it confirms what I thought, that they are pretty rare in Oz ( I was there for a year before, can't remember seeing any).

I'm moving to the Hobart area, my wife is Australian, wants to live in Oz for a few years, she's originally from Perth, but Hobart & Tasmania got us hooked when we both worked there for 3 months.

Of course if anyone asks me what Tasmania is like, especially my wife's Australian friends & family on the "North Island" (that's what I call the Australian mainland!), I'll tell them that they wouldn't like to live there, if you catch my drift!

This is actually the West Island. I live in the REAL North Island. :)
You might indeed find a few 214's over here.

Same with the gf and myself. We're both from Sydney originally but we'vebeen here 5 years now and it'd take a pretty convincing career move for both of us to get us away from here.

Here we just call it the mainland. although there are these two quaint islands to the east where they speak funny....

If you need a hand with finding a place to live and settling in here drop me an email to mediasolutions@ozemail.com.au

I think you'll find we're reasonably contemporary to you also (i'm 31 and gf is 25).

That's very kind of you, I've saved your e-mail address.

Maybe when we get to Hobart we can have a Tasmania MG-ROVER.ORG members meeting!

One of the things drawing us back to Hobart is exactly this, the people who seem to get drawn there, from the mainland & abroad, are all very friendly.

Billy.

Hobart is one of those magic places that manages to be big enough to have most of the things we take for granted in a 21st century Western nation, but at the same time is small enough to have pristine wilderness nearby, clean air, plenty of fresh water, a nice climate, good standard of living and something very rare in contemporary society - personable and friendly people who take the time to talk to you and make you feel welcome. It's like a perfect combination of all the good bits of a city and a country town and minus most of the bad bits of both.

that Tasmania mg-rover.org meet sounds good, although it will be very small and notable for its absence of MGs and Rovers!

Tasmania sounds like a good place for a holiday. Totally different to Perth I expect.Hope get their for a holdiay one day.
As a matter of interest, just saw a brand new black Rover 75 V8 - nil km's on the clock for sale in N.Z for about $70,000.
Oh to have the spare bucks !!

Absolutely awsome looking car but I guess given the fuel situation price wise, the days of the V8 are numbered.
I wait in hope to see what Nanjing can produce out of Longbridge.
Tried an S series Jag the other day.It was nicely finished but it just felt to heavy and cumbersome when driving compared to the 75.
Like the look of the Audi A3 but there again, up there in dollars.
