Warning!!!! I am not mechanically minded

i previously was the happy owner of an L reg 216sli that came down with the dreaded blown HG, i was quoted over £500 to get this sorted. With this fault the car has been SORN ever since.
I have now got a 1996 rover 216si, and today the thermometer hit the roof, the engine stalled and because of the previous experience, i checked the oil and sure enough it was full of gunk!!! Is this a sure fire sign of a blown HG?
If so, i cannot afford another set of wheels, is there any experts in the east lincs area who can support me with this problem?

I am no expert, but this is probably a more likely tell-tale sign of HGF.

hello this is definately another gasket failure! the cheapest way for you to sort this out is to do the majority of work yourself.
A HG kit is about £40.00 and if the head needs skimming that would cost about another £40.00. its quite simple to take of the head really i know it looks like theres alot of wires and pipes but they'll only fit in one place really so its pritty hard to get things wrong!
If you need any more advise please feel free to ask!

if you have 2 cars that are both the same rob - id be tempted to try doing one and if its all good do the second one and sell one on , if you make a mess of the first one take number 2 to a garage - were about are you ?

head gasket on a d16

never suffered that before

problems i have had are

big end going
conrod thru the front
wood rought key behind pulley going

but never had hgf

and now i wish i kept the head off the one with the big end gone

i know thats 150 miles before the big end went that the head was taken off and had new valves and been skimmed ect ect
