NEW FIAT SEDICI IN THE UK
The new Fiat Sedici, which goes on sale in the UK on Saturday 22 April, is Fiat Auto’s first entry in the compact SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) market. In a steadily growing segment, the market share for vehicles with off-road capability has risen from 1.7% in 1992 to the current level of over 6% for the entire European fleet, and the compact SUV arena continues to attract increasing public interest.
The new Fiat Sedici – Italian for sixteen, in reference to its innovative 4x4 drivetrain – represents an intelligent evolution of the all-wheel drive genre, combining genuine off-road ability with all the versatility and practicality demanded by the modern family on the move.
Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro in conjunction with Fiat Centro Stile, the new Sedici is the end-product of a recent collaboration between Fiat Auto and Suzuki. Built at Suzuki’s advanced new Hungarian production facility, the new compact SUV made its international public debut at the recent Winter Olympic Games, held in Fiat’s home city of Turin in February.
The new Sedici, priced from £12,495 on-the-road, will be available from launch in two trim levels – Dynamic and Eleganza – and powered by a spirited 107 bhp 1.6 litre, 16 valve petrol engine mated to a five speed manual transmission. Later this year the range will be extended by the arrival of a second powerplant – Fiat’s proven 120 bhp 1.9 MultiJet turbodiesel, allied to a six-speed manual gearbox.
Successfully combining SUV off-road performance with the dynamic agility of a front-wheel drive hatchback, the Fiat Sedici is fitted with a new, on-demand 4x4 system which features an electrically controlled centre differential and three driver-selected operating modes – 2WD, AUTO and LOCK – activated by a three-way transmission control rocker-switch housed in the centre console.
Via a central, electromagnetically controlled multi-plate clutch that transfers engine torque to the wheels with the most grip, the Sedici driver can easily and quickly select a transmission configuration best suited to the most diverse of driving conditions; conventional front-wheel drive, all-wheel drive with torque automatically modulated between front and rear axles, and, at speeds up to 37 mph, full-time four-wheel drive with an ideal, 50:50 torque split between front and rear wheels.
This simple, intuitive, electronic solution does away with the need for any cumbersome and intrusive transfer box gearlevers, whilst providing optimal traction and driving safety whatever the conditions.
Within a compact design that is lower and shorter than average for SUVs in this segment, yet boasts a generous 2500 mm wheelbase, the new Fiat Sedici’s spacious, flexible cabin meets the diverse demands of today’s active family, with numerous practical storage facilities, a full-width, top-hinged tailgate, and 60:40 split/folding and reclining rear seats which may be stowed compactly to increase the flat-floor luggage compartment volume from 270 to 670 litres.
The new Fiat Sedici’s comprehensive equipment specification has been carefully considered to enhance the comfort and safety of those on board, with ABS anti-lock brakes and EBD electronic brakeforce distribution, four airbags, remote central locking, electric front windows, air conditioning and an eight speaker radio/CD player fitted as standard across the range.
This generous standard equipment package is boosted by a range of innovative, safety and comfort enhancing options such as tinted rear windows, leather upholstery, a Safety Pack incorporating full-length curtain airbags and ESP (Electronic Stability Programme), an MP3 player, a 5-disc, centre console mounted CD changer and Fiat’s unique Connect NAV+ satellite navigation system.
With innovative engineering, sharp styling and practical versatility, the new Fiat Sedici will appeal to those drivers who demand genuine all-wheel drive ability without the associated size, weight and dynamic penalties. The Sedici is expected to attract some 1000 buyers within its first 12 months on the UK market, with the Eleganza model accounting for over 80% of sales, and an equal overall split between petrol and diesel engine choice.
DESIGN
Styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign – Italy’s leading design house – in conjunction with Fiat Centro Stile, the Sedici successfully carries the hallmarks of
Fiat’s distinctive design into a new sector for the company. Responding to the increasingly diverse transportation requirements of the modern family, the Sedici combines the high driving position and off-road ability of an SUV with the versatility and practicality of a family hatchback.
"I wanted to create a compact shape that is sturdy as a whole, with side windows that are low at the front of the windscreen pillar," says Giugiaro of his work. "This gives the car a distinctive look and is also more practical as far as visibility is concerned."
Styling
Fiat’s first foray into the small SUV market, the new Sedici features a bold and distinctive face with a plunging bonnet line, muscular wings and generous, flared wheel arches. Its large grille, which instantly identifies the Sedici as the latest addition to the Fiat range, is flanked by a pair of powerful, curved headlamps that flow up and outward beneath the bonnet line. They are complemented by twin circular front fog lamps, housed low in the deep front airdam.
From the side, the Sedici features a bold, sloping waistline that accommodates large front quarterlights and generous door mirrors to further enhance all-round visibility. The waistline rises dramatically from the steeply raked, divided A pillar through to the rear lights. The blacked-out B pillar enhances this striking dynamic line and emphasises the Sedici’s generous side glazing, whilst the broad, body-coloured C pillar rises to the roofline above the rear wheel arch rather than at the absolute rear corner of the car. "This styling option makes the vehicle less of a station wagon and gives it the typical appearance of a car that is stylish but also sturdy," says Giugiaro. "You could say that it acts as a psychological roll-bar."
At the rear, bright, high-visibility tail lamp clusters flank a full width, top hinged tailgate. The Sedici’s all-wheel drive capabilities are visually underscored by its protective, metallic grey front and rear undertrays, sweeping, integral roof rails and robust, black polyurethane side cladding that flows from both front and rear bumpers to offer additional wheel arch protection.
Life on Board
The new Fiat Sedici is 1755 mm wide, 1620 mm high and 4115 mm long – 100 mm lower and 110 mm shorter than average for SUVs in this segment – with a long 2500 mm wheelbase. These dimensions combine to create a car with a compact and urban-friendly footprint, yet a spacious and generously proportioned cabin.
The combination of a raised driving position, height adjustable driver’s seat, rake-adjustable steering wheel and deep front quarterlight windows within the divided A pillar afford the driver an ergonomically ideal driving position with excellent all-round visibility for a panoramic view of the road ahead.
The new Fiat’s driver-orientated interior design features a clear, functional instrument binnacle flanked by an intelligently configured and well-appointed centre console that houses the ventilation and audio controls. Meticulous attention has been paid to the positioning of all console-based functions for optimum user clarity and minimal driver distraction.
The Sedici’s cabin features hardwearing materials which have been chosen to stand up to the daily rigours of family life, whilst enhancing the acoustic comfort of the cabin. As well as reclining individually, each section of the 60:40 split/folding rear seat may be double folded forwards into an upright stowage position behind the front seat backs, boosting the volume of the flat-floor luggage compartment from 270 to 670 litres. Numerous oddment stowage spaces throughout the new Fiat include a large, lockable, passenger side glove box and generous door bins.
Customers will have the choice of either Striped Grey or Woven Grey upholstery according to the specification level, as well as the option of black or brown leather trimmed seats. Externally, there is a choice of two solid colours, as well as eight metallic shades.
SAFETY
Sedici’s robust chassis structure cocoons its occupants in a high-rigidity passenger safety cell augmented by progressive collapse, impact-absorbing areas which meet the most stringent crash-test protection standards.
It meets preventive safety needs with an adjustable cockpit that adapts to drivers of any size. The combination of a raised driving position allied to an extensive glazed area allows the best possible view of the road ahead. User-friendly ergonomics allow drivers to view all instruments and operate all controls without taking their eyes off the road.
PASSIVE SAFETY
Allied to a chassis designed to provide exceptional torsional stiffness yet absorb impact with maximum efficiency, the new Fiat Sedici may be fitted with up to six airbags, whilst front seatbelts with pre-tensioners and load limiters, three-point rear seatbelts, energy-absorbing steering wheel and ISOFIX attachments on the rear seats are all fitted as standard.
Airbags
The new Sedici comes with four airbags – driver and passenger front airbags and front side airbags – fitted as standard, with the further option of full-length curtain airbags. Their deployment is monitored by an electronic control unit that evaluates crash severity via a number of sensors located throughout the car.
The front passenger airbag may be deactivated manually using the ignition key, with a dashboard warning light indicating this condition. Though the seatbelt pre-tensioner remains active, a rear facing baby seat can therefore be safely fitted.
ISOFIX attachments
The Sedici is fitted with ISOFIX mountings to ensure the easy and safe installation of child seats. The attachments take the form of two pairs of brackets located at the base of the two outer rear seat squabs. The bracket sizes and settings are in accordance with European standards so that the seat can be re-used on any other vehicle.
ACTIVE SAFETY
The Sedici’s servo assisted braking system features two independent crossover hydraulic circuits to ensure prompt, linear braking and shorter stopping distances. Both 1.6 litre petrol and 1.9 litre diesel versions are fitted with 280 mm discs at the front and 220 mm drum brakes at the rear, which deliver strong, prompt performance and short stopping distances.
Safety levels are further enhanced by the addition of a full range of braking and stability controls – ABS anti-lock brakes, complete with EBD electronic brakeforce distribution, and a sophisticated ESP electronic stability programme to enhance cornering safety.
ABS
An advanced Bosch ABS anti-lock braking system is fitted as standard across the Fiat Sedici range, complemented by an EBD electronic brakeforce distribution function that governs the braking action on both front and rear axles to prevent the wheels locking, and ensures full control of the car under all braking conditions. EBD continuously adapts its operation according to wheel grip conditions and brake pad efficiency to reduce pad overheating.
ESP
The new Fiat Sedici also offers ESP Electronic Stability Programme – an option on Eleganza models – that activates to help control the car when stability is at risk.
Via sensors monitoring car body rotation, lateral acceleration and steering wheel input, the system assesses vehicle stability and the proximity of either an understeer or oversteer slide. The system restores stability by applying smoothly modulated braking to the appropriate wheel individually, and simultaneously reducing engine power. Engine power reduction is also carefully modulated to ensure a minimum of performance loss and, hence, continued driver satisfaction.

CONNECT NAV+
The CONNECT system, located in the centre console of the new Fiat Sedici, is a ground-breaking, on-line system that connects the driver to an extensive range of services via either manual control or voice commands.
At the heart of the system is a live telephone connection to the Targa Infomobility call centre, manned 365 days a year by operators who, through automatic vehicle recognition, will always speak the driver’s language.
The operator can provide the driver with information on traffic and weather conditions en route, find a bank, book an hotel or recommend a restaurant, and will even book airline tickets on request. If necessary, they will guide a driver step by step to a destination, send out a recovery vehicle, or jog the memory over diary appointments or anniversaries.
Information on a requested destination is transmitted by the operator to the Sedici’s CONNECT NAV+ system and displayed in the form of an icon on the screen. This information may then be opened, stored in the unit’s directory, or entered directly into the satellite navigation system for immediate guidance. In the case of a restaurant or hotel, the operator can either make reservations at the driver’s request or furnish a phone number for future reference. The system also provides the driver with 24 hour access to a Medical Help Line.

The MultiJet engine: a breakthrough in diesel technology
The common rail high-pressure direct injection diesel fuel system was designed and initially developed by the Fiat Group in the 1980s, with contributions from Magnetti Marelli and the Fiat Research Centre. It was handed over to Bosch for the final stages of development and industrial production in the early 1990s, and the first car to use the new system was the Fiat Group’s Alfa Romeo 156 JTD in 1997.
‘UniJet’, badged JTD, further revolutionised diesel engine design, allowing the proven Fiat JTD units to set new dynamic standards and compete head on with petrol engines across nearly all criteria, whilst still retaining the core diesel values of reliability, low maintenance, reduced CO2 emissions and exceptionally low fuel consumption figures.
In 2002, the Fiat Group was awarded the prestigious Economist Innovation Award (Energy and Environment category) for its ground-breaking work in developing the ‘common rail’ diesel technology that is now used by every major European car maker.
The sophisticated MultiJet technology of second-generation JTD engines differs from its UniJet predecessor in two essential areas; the injectors and the electronic control unit.
Within a UniJet engine, a pilot injection raises temperature and pressure inside the cylinder to improve combustion at the time of the main stroke. However, by dividing the main injection into a number of smaller injections, a MultiJet engine affords a fuller, more gradual combustion whilst the amount of diesel burnt at each stroke remains the same, thus promoting smoother, quieter combustion, reduced emissions and increased performance.
To facilitate multi-injection, the new injectors can both reduce the time lag between injections from 1500 to just 150 microseconds, and reduce the minimum quantity of fuel injected from 2 to less than 1 cu mm. In tandem, the new control unit modulates injection strategy continually to adjust to changes within three parameters; engine rpm, torque required at any given time by the driver, and coolant temperatures.
Thus, when coolant temperature is less than 60 degrees and torque requirement low, two small and one large injections are performed. As torque demand increases, the number of injections drops to two; one small and one large.
Under conditions of high rpm and high torque demand, only one injection is required whilst, with coolant temperature at over 60 degrees, emissions are minimised with one small, one large, and then one small injection in the sequence.
Hence, whilst performance is substantially enhanced, start-up times and exhaust smoke are reduced, noise levels and vibration are lowered to ensure a quieter drive and improved passenger comfort, and both fuel consumption and emissions are significantly reduced. All Fiat MultiJet turbo diesel units easily fulfil Euro 4 emissions requirements.
The latest version of Fiat’s 1.9 litre, 8 valve, 120 bhp MultiJet turbo diesel has undergone significant changes to increase performance and bottom-end torque, whilst further reducing noise levels and vibration.
The common rail system includes two new control strategies for automatically calibrating and balancing the diesel injection, both to lower noise and reduce vibration.
The new Sedici’s 1.9 litre MultiJet unit boasts an impressive 206 lb.ft of torque delivered at just 2050 rpm, allowing acceleration from 0-62 mph in 11.2 seconds. Fuel economy in the combined cycle is a commendable 42.8 mpg, and the Sedici 1.9 MultiJet 120 returns a CO2 emissions figure of 174 g/km. It is fitted with a variable geometry Garrett VGT 17 turbo and a DPF Diesel Particulate Filter to further enhance its low emission credentials.
RIDE AND HANDLING
More compact and lower than SUVs in the same segment, the new Fiat Sedici has been engineered to combine off-road capabilities appropriate to its new, on-demand four-wheel drive transmission, combined with the ride comfort and handling dynamics associated with an equivalent family hatchback.
Allied to an ultra-stiff chassis, and riding on a long, 2500 mm wheelbase which promotes outstanding high-speed stability, the new Sedici’s suspension has been designed to combine the highest possible levels of on-road ride comfort whilst still delivering uncompromised off-road performance.
The Sedici’s rack and pinion steering features electric powered assistance, a more compact and fuel efficient system than the traditional hydraulic arrangement because it only provides assistance when it is required. And the Sedici’s compact dimensions equip it with an urban, and off-road friendly 11.0 metre turning circle.
Front suspension
The new Sedici’s front suspension is an independent, MacPherson strut system, mounted on a steel sub-frame, which is anchored flexibly to the chassis to minimise the transmission of vibration and road noise. Allied to 205/60 R 16 tyres selected to achieve the optimum balance between on and off-road performance, this compact system combines high levels of on-road ride comfort and driving safety with the flexibility and articulation fundamental to true off-road ability.
Rear suspension
The new Fiat employs a torsion beam axle at the rear. This compact and durable engineering solution features a curved lightweight beam axle that delivers precise suspension control irrespective of surface conditions.
All-Wheel Drive
The Fiat Sedici is fitted with a new, on-demand 4x4 system which features an electronically controlled centre differential and three driver-selected operating modes – 2WD, AUTO and LOCK – activated via a three-way transmission control rocker-switch housed in the centre console. This simple, intuitive, electronic solution does away with the need for any cumbersome and intrusive transfer box gearlevers.
At the heart of the new 4x4 transmission is an electromagnetically operated dry multi-plate clutch coupling system that modulates the transfer of torque electronically, according to demand from either axle.
In 2WD mode, used during normal driving conditions, the 4x4 system transmits all engine torque to the front axle, reaping the benefits of a traditional front-wheel drive transmission – improved fuel economy, less mechanical wear and lower emissions.
When driving in adverse weather conditions, or on surfaces with low levels of grip, the Sedici driver can select on-demand 4x4 simply by setting the transmission control switch to AUTO. In this mode, the transmission employs the ABS anti-lock brake sensors to detect relative slip levels between front and rear axles and, generating electrical pulses which activate the electromagnetic clutch plate coupling system, intervenes where necessary.
The system’s AUTO setting automatically modulates torque distribution between the front and rear axle, transmitting all torque to the front wheels under the majority of normal driving conditions, whilst optimising torque transfer to the rear axle when the sensors detect low grip, or in anticipation of loss of traction during acceleration.
As its name suggests, LOCK splits engine torque equally between front and rear axles, to ensure prompt and stable take-off in mud, snow, sand or other adverse conditions. This 50:50 torque split is maintained up to speeds of 37 mph, above which the system automatically reverts to the AUTO mode.
The new Sedici’s combination of short 895 mm front and 720 mm rear overhangs and high 190 mm ground clearance make it ideally suited to the most challenging of off-road conditions, with approach, departure and break-over angles (the maximum angle of incidence that may be undertaken without the body touching the ground) of 20.3, 31.1 and 18.1 degrees respectively. The new Sedici will also readily climb gradients of 33%.

CONNECT NAV+ is fitted with a 6.5" TFT active matrix colour display. It includes an RDS radio with CD and MP3 music file playing functions, a trip computer, Dual Band GSM phone with hands-free operation and WAP internet access, a GPS map navigation system, atlas function and voice activated commands for the telephone and a voice memo.
