Just tried to replace my fuel filter on my 414 and would the pipesunions come loose, would they hell.Had to give up eventually because it was twisting the pipes.Any body actually done this job successfully?

Yeah...although it does take a bit of a nack.

You need two spanners....one on the top (smaller) nut and one on the bottom (larger) nut.

Then you turn them in opposite directions.

But you need to keep the spanners as high up on the nuts as possible as if you go any lower down they simply dont turn the nuts off and end up rounding them off.

Good luck

Have tried the two spanner approach but the nuts are really tight.Like i said the pipes start to twist as i exert the pressure. The mechanic i use said he gets a lot like this with rovers and toyotas. He said put some filter cleaner in the fuel.Is this worth a go.

It is possible - but difficult I'm afraid (if it is seized). Try squirting some WD40 in to the union.

DO NOT do what I nearly did, and use heat from a blow torch. Luckily my brain re-engaged before I got it lit!!!!

I left the WD40 overnite and still no joy.Don,t think that it has been changed for years. Can imagine the seen if i used a blowtorch.Nice idea but slightly flawed!!!!!!!!!!!

I managed mine...

You just have to be patient and keep trying.....

Try using some kind of extensions on the spanners to give you more torque, and use them like a pair of scissors in the palm of one hand squeezing together.

I did mine on my 214 recentely, was a TOTAL git to get off, however i did it in the end. Try some penetrating oil on the union joints.

My pipes wanted to bend aswell.

Make sure you have depressurised the fuel system using the little screw on the side of the union nut aswell. And have lots of rags ready, a lot of fuel comes out once it's off.

Tip: look at the new filter to see which ways the threads are going to make sure you arent tightening it up more!

Gave the spanner/scissors thing ago this morning to see if i could shift the unions on the damn filter. No joy at all.The nuts are well and truly seized on.A simple job that becomes a nightmare.I think that if i keep on trying something going to go drastically pete tong.

There is a certain technique to this...

But if it has never been changed before there is a 100% possibility that the nuts have seized...

I would say get some oil on there and take the spanners right to the top of each of the nuts....and use them separately...one arm for each.

I didnt do the scissor motion thing...didnt work for me.

Keep trying itll come out! Dont give up! lol.

I found tapping the end of the spanner with a hammer in an attempt to "shock" the nuts loose worked well. Take care not to slip or miss though and make sure you aren't causing any damage to the pipes in doing so.

Keep at it!
