i heard of a few guys talking about changing the standard turbo on the td's, just wondering if theres anyone out there whoes actually done it. The most common thing ive heard is putting in a vag variable vane unit in put id love to see some testimonal or even pics?
lad called chris 220sdi i believe did this..... well he started t anyway, never know/knew if he managed to finish it...... i think he ended up selling his car to dzl pwr. ask him he may know if it was done, or is still on the car if it was.
given my recent affairs with the vnt turbo on my car and speaking to garages who specialis in turbo's I'd avoiud vnt turbos for the time being, one place said it replaces 15-20 VAG vnt turbos per week, they run their business on these turbos!!
I'd traul scrapyards for a GT18 turbo from a vx/saab 2.2 TD engine, this should be a decent little upgrade but will probably need a lot of fabrication
Thats quite interesting, i was reading the other day that Land rover with the new TD5 engine, based the turbo on the L-series GT15, and they used a GT20 turbo.
"The new Garrett GT20 turbocharger, developed specifically for Td5, is based on the highly successful GT15 concept used for the L Series diesel, with its new generation bearing system and improved aerodynamic characteristics."
Look under "cooling system" here - http://www.discoverytd5.co.uk/td5.htm
Interesting read! :)
yeh GT20 would be nice too but a bit harder to find i think
thanks for the replys lads, would be a interesting project me thinks i think my old turbo is on the way out.

It's possible you could have your existing turbo re-built as a hybrid unit, although i don't know how it would compare cost wise to a replacment unit.
