I've got a question regarding my Rover 216 DOHC GTi ('91).
The 'check engine' light has come on and according to the fault code it appears to be a problem with the TDC sensor. I believe this is in the distributor on the DOHC model but before I go ahead and get a new one and fit it I was wondering if you guys (and gals?) thought the symptoms exhibited were caused by the TDC sensor failing?
The car seems to run fine at the moment with the exception that idling is slightly erratic; it'll idle anywhere between 800-1700 RPM but generally when waiting at traffic lights it'll decline back to 800 after a random period of time and stay there but occasionally it'll sink down to 800 before bouncing back to 1500 and down again (repeat ad-infinitum.) Fuel economy also sucks at the moment, even if you take in to account the additional fuel from idling at a higher speed whilst stationary. Is this likely the fault of the TDC sensor or am I looking at something else as well?
Also, any tips on replacing the dizzy? Haynes are most unhelpful in this regard and barely give it a couple of paragraphs and I'd rather not destroy the timing (the sort of thing I'd rush in and do too easily  )
Any help will be gratefully received (again!) :) Thanks people.
EDIT: I've pulled out the ECU fuse, waited, and replaced on a few occasions. Fault code still comes up. :(
