My brother recently had the cat changed on his 96 416.

Is the old one I kept the same as used on my 420SDi?

I daresay the guts are different but as I intend to decat it are the overall dimensions the same.

Having decatted a 94 220GSi I used to own with a replacement pipe from MotoBuild once the bolts have rusted on they are a swine to get off. I intend to prepare the other cat so that once mine has been removed it is just a matter of bolting the other one straight on.

Why not just gut your existing cat?

Did that to mine while it was still on the car. I could get the bolts off at the engine end, so i undid the rear end of it and chopped it out from there. It was a pig of a job, but well worth the greif.

I think the cat on the 1.6 wont fit because the diameter on the diesels is bigger but i may be wrong.

I have a 420sldi, if i de-cat it what what kind of power can i expect? will it have more grunt under 2000rpm? And most important will it still pass the MOT?

Many people report reduced turbo lag but not any big power increases.

It'll still pass the MOT as only the smoke is tested not the HC's which is what the cat oxidises to make the exhaust smell better.

Yep that's where i plan to get mine from I'm also getting that tune am thing when funds allow. From what I've read this will transform the car.

I was shocked at how good the TuneAM was on my SDI, well recommended!

I am getting very confused with all the talk about tuneams and mafams.

Is the tuneam the box suitable for a late 420 intercooled?

If so what is involved in fitting?

Yes it is, the MAFAM isn't.

To fit it you place the control box by the PAS reservoir (well I did), run the main cable to the fuel pump connector plug, where you attach a few wires using the supplied connectors, a pair of pliers and a screwdriver (for opening up the Scotchlocks), followed by running another cable to the battery, and attaching using the supplied spade connector.

If you have the TuneAM Pro, you then connect a few more wires to the MAP sensor wiring, which is by the brake fluid reservoir. One wire needs cutting, and you attach two of the TuneAM wires to the ends using the connectors.

You then need to cable-tie the wiring in place, to ensure it is tidy and doesn't get caught up in anything else.

Then you play with the knobs and enjoy the fun!!!
