Hi all
recently bought a 620 diesel cheap,it had been standing for over a year, and has done a high mileage(150k).
put a new battery in it and it starts and runs fine. all the brake disks are rusted up so i am replacing them this weekend and will check over all the mot able bits while its jacked up.
i've not had a diesel before but while i was at the mot station getting my 416 done a few weeks ago in the next bay was a diesel getting a thorough thrashing(i thought the throttle was stuck) when i asked the mechanic what was going on he said they had to floor the throttle as part of the emission tests. Question is as i dont fancy my car having the b****cks revved out of it is it possible to adjust the throttle pedal so that it doesnt rev so high, or would this be noticed. i know there is a rev limitter but i dont think it comes on till after 5k revs.i've changed the oil, filter, air filter, fuel filter and put injector cleaner in it.and theres no smoke coming out the exhaust.the engine sounds ok so i think it should manage the thrashing, but its not the way to treat an engine(imo).
i've got a new cambelt ready to fit on but i didnt want to fit it until after the mot because i couldnt undo the crank pulley bolt and wanted to ask the mechanic to slacken it with an air wrench after doing the mot.
P.S. what a pig to change front discs ,am in the process of welding up a frame to convert a bottle jack into a bench press.

Yeah the front disks on a 600 are a right pain!

As for the MOT question, they have to rev the diesel to get it through the test, usually the mechanic will come and say "hows the cambelt? been changed recently?" for this reason. I think if i remember rightly its the emissions or something like that.

On the 600, the throttle pedal on the derv isnt really adjustable, they dont rev it to the limiter, just about after 4k revs, which when you travel on an unrestricted road across the pond is about 110/115mph anyway :) after about 4300 your entering the red area anyway, so not good to go here very often!

Get the belt done though! just for re assurance mate, other wise £££ repair bills.

Put something under the carpet to stop the pedal going down so far!

just over 4k doesnt sound too bad ,i thought they took it into the red until the limiter cut in.might bluetack a bit of carpet under the pedal just in case.

Get one of those cheap eletric impact wrenches (they're about 15 quid from Makro and look a bit like an electric drill). I use it all the time for high torque nuts. There's usually a 4 inch extension too, so you can reach the pulley bolt from the wheel arch. I've done the last two cam belts this way.

It's also very good for undoing drive shaft nuts.
