hyperfocal 15-06-2006, 06:31 hi just bought a 220sdi 98 from auction and limped home at a max speed of about 25 mph car seems to die when revved and smokes
starts fine /tickovers fine
any ideas
many thanks
Disconnect the MAF and the EGR valve (a forum search should reveal all on this).
If it still does it then check wiring to number 1 injector for chafing.
Also check that air isn't getting into the fuel through a loose bleed nipple or fuel hose connection or even the primer bulb.
Those are the most common faults.
Oops almost forgot, another slightly stranger possibility is that the brake lights are faulty. (when the brake lights are on the fueling is cut from the engine when the revs are above 1200 rpm). 200's are known for faulty boot hinge wiring causing all sorts of weird and wonderful electrical problems so this is also worth checking - peel back the rubber boot to reveal all those frayed and broken wires).
also check your boost hoses as they can cause this ussue if they are split
Rover_ron 15-06-2006, 15:02 In addition to the above suggestions, check for collapse of the intake hose - the one from the bottom of the air filter housing. Look/feel for kinks in it.
Its going to be one of these.

tried all these no joy but havent changed the maf
also can only rev to just under 3000 then loses nearly all power and smokes a lot
also should the diesel injection pump buzz all the time even with the engine stopped and the ignition switched on/doesnt seem to be the solenoid as disconnected and still did it
starts and ticks over lovely
thanks

Its definitely an air supply problem by the sounds of it.
I'll bet there is a split in the bottom intercooler hose - right on the elbow.
I'd recommend taking off both hoses - splits are hard to find and only open up under pressure.

just taken off intercooler hoses both seem fine/refitted and still have problem

Did you check this. It could be something as simple as air getting into the fuel.
Try running it without the intercooler hose connected (temporarily obviously). This will rule out turbo problems.

hyperfocal 16-06-2006, 10:25 just changed the intercooler and pipes all good condition no change
this is driving me nuts
picking up new maf this afternoon
thanks for all the advice everyone
tony
wont be the maf, not on a 200, get a cheap boost guage and check its boosting right, could be problem with boost spikes/overboosting/underboosting.
replace the fuel lines in the engine bay, if any of these are letting air in the car will run like a dog, I'd change the fuel filter aswell
hyperfocal 16-06-2006, 19:08 cheers for the advice
just done this test
run the engine pumped the primer bulb which was soft and engine run fine with no smoke /stop pumping the bulb which went soft and same old problem
any chance it could be the turbo?
Sounds like a fuel lift pump problem or air getting into the system (usually via the priming bulb or the fuel filter seals).
Turbo won't be affected by the fuel. If the turbo lets go you'll get lots of blue smoke, and I mean lots of it!
hyperfocal 16-06-2006, 19:53 cheers
im new to these engines where is the fuel lift pump
Rover_ron 16-06-2006, 19:56 cheers
im new to these engines where is the fuel lift pump
Its built in to the end of the injection pump so not accessible or replaceable easily if at all.
It doesn't usually cause a problem, so have you eliminated air leaks and replaced the fuel filter.
Ron
hyperfocal 16-06-2006, 20:07 replaced filter and will check pipes tommorow
many thanks
hyperfocal 16-06-2006, 20:21 just a little question my diesel injection pump buzzes is this normal?
Yup its normal.
If air is getting into the fuel the most likely place is the priming bulb on the fuel line.
hyperfocal 17-06-2006, 06:03 cheers will check today

Had that on mine, but it didn't effect the fueling, it knackered up the central locking and blew the relays in the Lucas 5AS ECU...
