: Idle control valve

Dave,

I'd like to pick your brain on a few issues regarding my 200Vi...

Firstly, regarding the Idle Control Valve. I have read that when its electrical connector is removed, the engine revs should rise (due to the solenoid being withdrawn). Is this correct or am I talking a load of twaddle? When I remove the connector on mine, nothing happens.

Secondly, I have recently performed a compression test on the engine with the following results; No#1 cylinder @ 200psi, No#2 cylinder @200psi, No#3 cylinder @185psi & No#4 cylinder at 180psi. Should I be worried about the 20psi difference between cylinders & is the 200 mark about right for the compression on this engine.

Cheers,

Richard.

Hi Rich

I wouldn't take too much to heart about the apparent non-operation of the IACV

Do you have an idle speed problem? If not, then I wouldn't worry :D

Aslong as the compression pressures are within 10% of each other (20PSI) then there's nothing to worry about :)

No so much an idle speed problem, more of a lumpy idle. Could a faulty IACV cause this?

I changed mine a couple of months back, reset the mems with the pedal trick, and the car ran better for a while, but like everything i do to my car, the results are short lived and it goes back to running exactly the same>=( Got mine from the scrappies, £2 for that and a temp sensor, both were off a Rover 100! Same fitment:D

On the back of that Kris - there are many components that are interchangeable from different MGR models - gearboxes/engines etc etc
