Does the diesel have some kind of stepper motor like the petrol engines? The reason I ask is that when my '97 diesel is on Pos. II on the ignition I can here a ticking noise from the engine bay (around the airbox area). On my old petrol engines I remember a stepper motor problem that meant the stepper just sat ticking away. Is this is the same in the diesel engines?
If not then what is the damn ticking noise? Is it bad? does it matter?
Cheers

i believe it the fuel pump, its nothing to worry about
Indeed, it's the pump maintaining the fuel pressure. My SDI and ZR-TD have both done this, but it's been more like a buzzing noise. Nothing to worry about. Start worrying when it doesn't do this anymore!

Or there is a massive explosion

Lol, both of my L-series cars must have had very long fuses! I've got a fire extinguisher in the car for when the inevitable happens!
Thanks all for the help. I'll go and tell the disposal team to go home.
BTW: Mention of a fire extinguisher has got me wondering about two straps in the boot. They are on the drivers side against the boot wall. Mine are empty but I was wondering if they were supposed to have something in them? Am I missing some original toolkit/firstaid/extinguisher from my car?

The Straps were for a first aid kit and a warning triangle/fire extinguisher (available as optional extras)
