: Anyone done an L-series cambelt?
Dogudders 06-07-2006, 13:55 Just wondered what peoples experiences are as need to do one soon. Special tools, tricky bits etc?
Did a K-series camblet last weekend and was fine with that, just want a 'heads up' before tackling this one!
Cheers
Sean 220 06-07-2006, 14:08 there not too bad, there are 2 timing belts on the l series, one for the timing and one for the fuel timing, there are timing holes on the pump and also the flywheel

Was thinking of just doing cambelt, does fuel pump belt need doing at the same time?

most people do them together and replace the alternater belt while your on
of coarse if the fuel pump belt fails its not an expensive failure you just wont be going anywhere in a hurry:ouch: unlike the cambelt which can be big bucks.
I got both my belts changed yesterday for £100, £50 of which was for labour. Carried out by an ex-Rover dealer mechanic, now working independently, who knows his stuff.
The cam timing belt is straightforward enough, but getting the fuel pump belt timing spot-on is much trickier. I thought £50 was a small price to pay for the peace of mind.

Does that include new tensioner pulleys?
i wouldnt bother trying it yourself if your unsure! it took me y.day 5 hours just to get the cam and fan belt off, got to refit the new ones 2day! if you do go a head a have a go buy a cam belt kit with all new pulleys which will set you back about £100 but includes the fan belt which you might aswell change at the same time and a injection pump belt!
if id ive known though i think id have rather payed a garage about £150 to change the whole lot!

No, just the two belts - the car has only done 55,000 miles. I'll probably get the tensioners changed at the next belt change, which will be dictated by mileage, rather than time.

I'm pretty handy with mechanics, have done several rebuilds, cambelts etc, only done my wifes k-series a fortnight ago and that was quite easy but never one on an L-series, was just trying to get an idea if its a tricky one or not
Littlebert 11-07-2006, 14:17 Anyone know of a good online stockists for L series Diesel timing belts/tensioners? The local ex-Rover dealers around Warrington have switched to knocking out French 'polished turds' these days....
