Sounds normal to me, (assuming the smoke was black)

you are running red diesel?

You do realise that your internals will be died red, and if VOSA pull your vehicle over you will be in BIIIIIGGG trouble.

Check for split intercooler hoses. Also try removing and plugging the vacuum line to the EGR valve in case it is sticking open

red derv doesn't smoke any more than normal derv. But if you get caught using it on the road then expect to say bye bye to a lot of cash and possibly your car too.

Sounds like an intercooler hose (most common fault on the diesel forum i think).
