I am currently looking for a new gearbox for my car. I have come across a 1997 216 coupe that is being broken for spares i just need to know f it uses the PG1 gearbox or not ??

Is this to go into the Metro, Joel?

Yeah the gearbox in it at the moment has done 97,000 miles and i dont think that it will hold up much longer. Having the 1.8 wont help matters. I know its possible to fit the gearbox from a MK3 R216 because a few metro ppl have done it. I just wondered if the 216 coupe i found used the same gearbox. As the PG1 as found in the turbo's MGF etc will fit but it is alot of work as you can probably imagine.
Or i may just fit a R65U instead.

Joel.

Fit the R65U, it will be a whole lot easier, as it was originally fitted to the Metro.

I looked at fitting the PG1 box, but soon shelved that idea 8)

The chances are that i will fit a R65u.
I have seen a PG1 in a vvc metro but the guy had to have driveshafts made up and all sorts of other things. I'll try and dig out a pic if i can find it.

What cars was the R65U fitted too ??

Yeah, I'd be well interested in seeing a pic of that, Joel, see what you can do.

Custom made 'shafts sound expensive to me :eyes

The MA R65U gearbox was fitted to 95>400 and 95>200 except 2 litre and diesel variants

Plus, the PG1 'box is bloody heavy compared to the R65 :)

What are the actual differences between the R65 and PG1 boxes and their application?

The PG1 is a Honda designed box fitted to the more powerful engines, being the 1.6 D Series, T16 220/420/620ti/820

The R65 is a PSA-MA 4 or 5 speed manual gearbox and is well known for its light weight. It is used in the Metro, 200 and 400 models fotted with the 1.1, 1.4 and 1.6 K Series engines.

The PG1 is a much bigger and bulkier box and can be specified with a Torsen LSD - as in the 220 Turbo Coupe and 200BRM.

Both boxes are quite reliable, too :)
