: Rover 220 Coupe - 1994 - Oil in cylinder

Hello, I have 94 200 GTi 126000mls. I wondered where the oil was going and it seems it is going into the cylinder near the air filter and out out the exhaust. Runs lumpy and lost some power. Is it likely to be rings, valve or head. Is it worth repairing or replace the engine- recon or scrappy?
Thanks.

It turned out to be a burnt exhaust valve on No.4 Cylinder (near air filter). Had it fixed, but now it's smoking like hell. They say the cylinder need a rebore - piston slap. I've just paid nearly what it was worth, so I'm not paying even more. I think I dropped a massive clanger. So I'm afraid it's spares or repair. Emigrating to Oz next June you see.
Thanks

I wouldn't like to say for sure what's letting the oil into the cylinder, but on my 1.6 K16, it turned out to be the head gasket which was letting oil into the cylinders. It started off with just one cylinder, and then got progressively worse.

Best get a compression test done first of all. Any unusual noises?

if its any help,
on most engines the cylinder nearest the gearbox often fails first.

ok from what ive read and seen myself ...they never need a rebore
its often worn rings or stuck gummed rings which will be causing the problems.

anyway ...by the time you buy all the parts ...and take all the time to fit them ...its long and costs a lot ..

if you want to do a quicky ...using all the gaskets again ...bar the head gasket...there are genuine piston rings on ebay ...see he's put up the price by a fiver since i bought them off him

despite it saying discovery mpi etc ...they willl fit your motor .

Thanks for that. I haven't got the time to do it myself. It's still a major op. Perhapse a garage wouldn't like to change the ring without a rebore though.
Since I will only be keeping it for 8 months instead of years. I've got to decide it's future, Thanks again.

There are lads on the other rover forums etc ...that have testified that the bore in the t-series engine never seems to wear out ...
They have had engines out etc to recondition ...and are still seeing all the honing marks after 150,000 miles etc .

Must be something to do with the durability of the liners ...

Cast iron engines of olde ....had no liners and bores were bored directly in the cast iron....thats the type of engine that needs a re-bore after ...probably less that 130,000

yours will need a re-hone ...though ...to help to rings bed in .

besides that ....oversize rings and pistons were never available from rover or now x-rover.

so you would have to source these elsewhere...........if available

Thanks very much for all your help. It's just a shame I spent money to replace a valve when there was ring trouble as well. I debated to have a recon engine fitted, but that would definately cost more than it's worth. I'm beginning to regret it now. Thanks again.
