Hello
I bought a used Rover 400 last July and when asked by the insurance what model it was I stated 414 16V which I found in the log book, the insurance said that was'nt right and asked where I had bought the car from, they contacted the garage who told them it was 414 I, and qoted insurance on that, I am in the process of renewing my insurance with a new company and when I have put my registration Number in it has come up with a quote for model 414 SE 8V, does anybody know how I can find out the correct model type, thanks in anticipation
Eric

Logbook/V5?

Your V5 as 'Brown Wings :eyes ' should state the exact trim level of your car.

If for any reason you don't have the V5 to verify this then you can contact the DVLA on this number:

Vehicle Enquiries 0870 240 0010

Quote them your reg number and they should be able to tell you there and then.

Does the car have the handbooks? Look inside the front cover of the Service Guide, where there should be an ID label detailing the car. It might be inside the main handbook cover, if not in the service one. If you find it, check the VIN no matches the one at the base of the passenger door pillar (with the door open - on the body side). If it does the label (on the inside cover) should give you what spec. the car really is.

From experience, insurance companies get a bit funny when you mention "SE" models - because often their system only lists mainstream models - and the operator seems to think you're having them on, when you insit that that is the car!

Failing that I don't know if Dr. Dave will be kosher to it, but perhaps if you provide him the VIN, the EPC (or some other means) may be able to deciper what it is. Whatever you do DO NOT post the VIN on the forum!

Phoning the DVLA will probably produce little result as they will only quote what is on the V5 (logbook) - if that.

Well if the insurance company say that it's an 8 valve have a look at the engine to see if it is a 8v or 16v. It should say on the rocker box cover 'TWIN CAM 16 VALVE' if the engine is a 16v unit.

What does the logbook say for the engine number? You can tell if it is a 8 or 16 valve from the engine code
14K2F = 1400 8 Valve
14K4F = 1400 16 Valve

Hope this helps

I could decipher it from the VIN number if you like 8)
