: Coolant System

I have finally heard about the repairs on my 416 Si.

Everything is in order, but I am left with one question.

In March 2002, the local Rover agent did the 100,000km service, checked the coolant system and replaced the coolant.

I find now that the radiator has corroded severely, and the coolant system is brown and gooey.

How could the corrosion set in so badly in just 3 months? Could the HGF have caused this, or is it likely that the coolant system corrosion was present at the time of the last service, or even caused by it?

Any advice?

Did the dealer put anti freeze in the coolant? Is there 'mayo' under the oil filler cap? Is there any white smoke coming out the exhaust? Are you loosing water?

I reckon the brown and gooey coolant is indeed oil-contaminated >=( not a good sign.

Head Gasket replacement and replacement of the top and bottom radiator hoses and a system clean should fix it 8)

But it's a messy time consuming job >=(

Thanks for that.

I have blown the head gasket, and looking back at the papers, it does seem that there was a slight coolant leak from the maifold gasket.

Pity they couldn't have fixed it then. At the moment I am looking at almost $NZ3000 of repairs.

mmmmmm...... peanut butter sandwiches for lunch for a while I think. :(
