Hi, I've been tearing my hair out trying to find out what is going on with my car for the past few weeks so I thought I would see if you can shed any light on the subject.

I have a G reg 1990 Rover 214 GSi. Since I have been the owner it has been serviced and tuned regulary. Recently I have been having starting problems, and problems while driving. At the moment the car will not start unless it is jump started. I have replaced the battery, HT leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm, sparkplugs and alternator. There doesn't seem to be any spark getting through unless I attach some jump leads and then it sparks first time and starts straight away. Only thing I can think of that is left to change is the coil.

Unfortunatly this is not where my problems end. When it has started it idles fine until it warms up and then stalls, and refuses to start again (even if jump started) until it has been left to cool down again. Also when the engine is running it will not rev above 2500 - 3000 revs. It looks like some sort of rev limiter is cutting in. It doesn't matter how much you rev it it revs to about 3000, instantly drops to 2500, then shoots back up to 3000, then 2500, etc, etc.

The last time it was tuned i was told that it was a very solid engine and had excellent compression for its age (it has done over 100k) and there was nothing wrong with it. I am at a total loss as to why it has started exhibiting this strange behaviour over the past three weeks.

Hi Fyrespray, welcome to the forum.

I think the problem with your car lies either with the crankshaft sensor (Pt# ADU7340, about £25) or the MEMS ECM.

Both problems give the symptoms you suggest, I would replace the cranshaft sensor first and see how you go.

Try that, and come back to me 8)

Well I bought the new crankshaft sensor, and after about half an hour of cursing, scraping my knuckles and bending my wrist in angles it was never designed to go into (do they purposely put everything in the most inaccessable place possible ???) the new item was fitted and functioning perfectly.

Thanks a lot it would have taken me ages to work that one out and now my car seems to be running perfectly again, i'll definetly be back to hassle you again next time something goes wrong.
