Could be a slipped cylinder liner :(

Have a look on www.rangerovers.net - great forum on there

Also have a look at www.landyzone.co.uk.

Is it LPG converted??

Could be a cracked block. How many miles has it covered??

Regards,

Steve

the 4.2 is notorious for cracked block/slipped liners "porous block" and would explain why they've found nothing. Unfortunately its the end of the block if thats the case. The 4.0 in my P38 slipped a liner & cost me a fortune, ****ty old engines the 3.9+ rover V8's in all honesty.

RPI engineering might be worth a bell, they're very helpful over the phone (although i dont believe them about the expensive chips they sell)

Could stick a 200tdi in it if theres no repair

Good luck
