there was another story about that same guy though i think...which i s a little more independant.

Basically, this guy had his PS3 sitting next to a hoover bag/building site and it was runnning 24 hours a day. Like it was in a total dust enviroment and not looked after as the article says.

I cant find the link though. :sad2:

but yeah the warranty was voided because of dust.....except there was more dust than there was PS3

I'm assuming taking the lid off to clean it would void your warranty anyway though?

oh yeah. Dust voids warranty, except in this case I agree with Sony.

Naturally, from the headline you wouldn't perhaps agree, this is why that article really does need to include a picture, luckily, here they are.

As you can see, its coated on the outside with what looks like fine sand / building dust. So I believe Sony were quite within their rights to tell him that he's voided his warranty by neglecting it. If its like this on the outside, god only knows what the inside is like!

This is like running your car without checking the oil and then expecting the manufacturer to replace the engine when it blew up.

Not really the same as you have to maintain a car to keep it running well, a games console you should not have to touch I know I havent done anything to mine.

Ok, perhaps a fair point my analogy although in this case I stand by it. But c'mon, you can't seriously expect Sony to pay out given the state of that PS3!

Its common sense that if you live in a dusty environment (god knows just how dusty it is if its in that state), you keep your electrical equipment as clean as possible. Dust acts like a blanket on electrical stuff and it will cause it to overheat. And in that environment, it almost is like maintaining your car - you look after the console by cleaning it!

God knows how long a 360 would have lasted in that environment!

Admitidly I haven't shown mine to a hoover, but then I don't live in a sandstorm.

Back in my smoking days my PC would suck in rediculous amounts of crap and yes I would expect any componant that went wrong as a result to be replaced under warrenty unless I have physically smashed it up or poured something into it and its under warranty it should be fixed foc.

no way? are you seriously trying to defend this? i thought youd of just given in and realised that the story was one sided and wrong!

its quite blatently not been looked after correctly

edit: its like using your phone all its life in torrential rain, then complaining and wanting a refund when it doesnt work due to water ingress

cheers for the pics steve. i had seen them previous but couldnt get a hold of them today.

As i said it was beyond a joke the nick that PS3 was in. Like a building site its been on. The article is soo one sided too and the pics prove otherwise

I have kept my 60gb PS3 in Its entertainment center since its purchase. It is known within the PS3 community that the thing is a HUGE dust magnet. I took good care of it,

yeah its well looked after :daft:

You all know my thoughts on the PS3. its an awesome machine thats needing games written for it. Thats why the XB is my preferred console at the moment. This is just a fan boi article though and is stupid.

What's worse is that the FoxNews network in the States picked it up and ran it as a story... Taking the owners' side completely. No mention of any issues with the 360 and made out that Sony were arses and all PS3s were venerable to dust!

I was so enraged, I emailed them to complain!

its a joke what the media get up to TBH. the author was more than likely an XB owner. I hate how some people just cant take off the tinted glasses and see an objective POV. Im glad there is competition in the console market. The consumers are the biggest beneficieries (sp)

except in this case I agree with Sony.

Shocker

Where did those photos come from ? They seem very "set-up"

SteveChilds
24-11-2007, 11:25
They were released by Sony, they are photos of the actual machine when it arrived in their Repair Centre, so in that respect they are 'setup' as in they were taken to show the state of the unit as its owner was going around telling people they had turned down his repair claim due to the fact it was too dusty.

Naturally, without photos of the acutal machine to show what state it was in, people think of a little bit of dust and assume Sony is being an arse.

When as these photos show, its far from the case.

Interesting it appears that the owner tried to get an injuction against Sony for releasing these pictures, but after legal advice, Sony Released them anyway. If the owner was simply trying to get Sony some bad PR, you can understand why he wouldn't want photos posted and also why many people think it was an anti-sony PR stunt by a 360 fan boy.
