: What we all suspected...
antonypalourti 26-07-2002, 14:00 If anyone had any doubts about how much of a ****** Jeremy Clarkson is, read his column in today's Sun. He paints just about the most negative picture of MGR ever. He does concede that the MG ZS is a superb drivers car, but lacking in almost every other aspect. Why can't journalists support what progress MGR has made over the last couple of years with such minimal resources?
RichardPhillips 26-07-2002, 15:07 Don't bother spending money on the sun newspaper, read it online here:
http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2002340972,00.html
(hope the link works)
The report does start off a bit negative, but it does end on a plus point. He does talk up the abilities of the ZS.
Dave turbo 26-07-2002, 16:01 Thats because he has the same blinkered journalistic opinion. He talks about alot of points which clearly he is not fully informed about i.e the 1.8 turbo isn't to make it faster but emmissions and drivability.

Big-headed swines like Clarkson seem to drift in and out of popularity... sometimes you like him and agree with him... other times you disagree with him and want to shoot him!
People who test cars get to experience a whole myriad of car styles, levels of performance, drivability and luxury.
You could argue that Clarkson has such high standards that nothing short of a top of the range Porsche is going to be wholeheartedly praised in his book.
Take it with a pinch of salt... I ignore a lot of 'snobbish' reviews the media seem to churn out for that reason.
These forums provide probably the most in-depth and accurate reviews of the MG-R range.. simply because we all share a common interest, and it's so simple to discuss our views!
So stuff Clarkson and like and only take notice of what the 'real' owners believe and say....
[Catches breath back..........]
:D
Kevin Davis 26-07-2002, 20:29 I rate Clarkson, i read his book on Holiday 'Born To Be Riled' and a bloody good laugh it is too, he rips the **** out of everything and praises it in the same sentence, that's bloody clever, he hits the nail on the head every time. We love MGR, but sometimes we have to take off the rose tinted glasses and see the true light, (ie, the 800 is ****e!) Clarkson never wears rose tinted glasses and sees everything at face value, for instance, when he says the Toyota Corolla is crap you agree with him, when he says the Vauxhall Vectra is crap you agree with him, but if he says MGR are crap (which he hasn't) you start to throw your toys out of your pram. Come on guys, get real, His article in todays Sun was dead right, we all know it and MGR knows it too so stop whining. And if you are so fickle you think someone elses opinion is more important then put your name down for a *** and join the club.
ichatfield 26-07-2002, 20:40 You know, ****e is entirely subjective. I would rather have a large luxury car (800)
with some reliability issues than say
a small sports car with a engine that
does little for me, IMHO.
Course the 75 came out and I bought one
of those instead! :)
Perhaps one of the reasons Clarkson has a downer on MG-R is that MG-R is quite a successful brand at the moment. Whereas his own star is waning. His chat show has mercifully been canned, and it looks like his next gig will be on Top Gear. What goes up...
He did give the MG TF a good review in the Sun. Aswell as the ZT in the Sunday Times.
jonesey2k 27-07-2002, 15:13 Doesn't he say at the end that he hopes that MG/R survives? Well than. And in his book "100 cars to make you go PHROAR!" there are 2 rovers... and no vauxhalls!

To me it sounded like he's talking the car up. Says it's the most fun car Rover has created since the SD1 - that sounds like praise to me. And this is good, as a lot of people will read this and the message will spread. MG-R need people like Clarkson on their side.

Yes, exactly...well said K A:)
JohnSwitzer 27-07-2002, 21:06 Lets remember that this is the guy who said that he would never, ever buy a B*W after the Rover Group fiasco. And true to his word he hasn't.
After re-reading the article, I can only conclude that Clarkson's his own man and he rather likes the ZS.

Eh? I saw his column in The Sunday Times, where he alegedly did a 215 (or so) mile journey in three hours, in an MG ZS, concluding that is is a "bloody good car"
