Hi all the sidelights have suddenly conked on my 400, I replaced the fuse but it blew immediately, anyone have any idea where to start looking for the short circuit? (I hate electrics, give me a mechanical problem any day)

Underneath the battery tray would be a good place to look for a short...
What engine is it?
Check the wiring loom going into the ECU if it is the same as a R45 as this caused mine to blow fuses one after the other.
On the 45 they were known to rub through the insulation and short all sorts of wires going inot the ECU.
slowly got worse and caused more problems short circuiting other electrics.
I'm sure someone with more knowledge would be able to confirm if the ECU is in the same place etc.
Worth a check if nothing else but to rule it out.

thanks for the reply---it is a 1.6 petrol with a boot (not a hatchback)

On the 1.6 there is a wiring loom that runs alongside/under the battery tray, it can rub against a sharp edge on the tray and cause a problem, if it's not there then it may take a while to find!
