Hi Dr Dave,

Please help my MG ZS180 sounds awful, I have taken the car to my local dealer and the fault has been diagnosed as a faulty exhaust downpipe.

Problem: The computerised parts system does not show the exhaust downpipe and therefore the dealer cannot order it. They are trying to find out the part number......in the meantime my poorly MG is getting looks for all the wrong reasons...

Can you help ????

I desperately want my ZS180 sounding great again !!!

It should be easy enough to identify; if not, help is freely available

Has it split?

Dr Dave,

Thanks for the reply.

1. You cannot see any damage, the symptoms are:

a) Between 1500 - 3000 revs under load a grating/vibration coming from the front/mid section of the car.
b) When cold even revving the engine to 2000rpm not in gear the noise is apparent.
c) After a long trip (car warmed up) the noise is a lot lower.

'My local dealer diagnosed the downpipe but did not say it was split'

2. It has been a week now and my local dealer has been in contact with the main dealer, who is in turn speaking with the MG/Rover technical department.

:err: They have not yet confirmed the part number, ordered the part or it seems moved any closer to booking a date for my car to be fixed...

This is why I thought the forum could help ?

Yeah, it could be the front pipe.....:cus:

Nope  I can't find it here either

All I know is that it will probably start with 'WCG'

If it only does it at certain revs its not normally a slit pipe as then it would make a noise all the time and more so under load. Sounds like a dead cat rattling about inside.

......but how could a cat crawl up into the front pipe, eh Dave?

OK OK, Jokes are a bit of fun to lighten the day.

Anyhow, this does not help me get my MG fixed.

Just for reference with regards to the grating/vibrating noise from the front/mid section.

Upon driving home last evening a trip of 70 miles. The noise was still apparent at the end of the journey. It was not as loud.

The noise definitely lessens as the car warms up. It does sound like it is coming from the exhaust.

The dealer assures me that this does not impact on the car, however, I work in London and whilst at low speed driving along the noise is at its peak. Everyone looks round and they see a new MG ZS.

What sort of image does this create !!!! :cus:

Exactly! This needs to be sorted ASAP

Image is everything, full stop.

[Sorry for the joke]

This might not be relevant as im not familiar with your car.

But

On the single point 1.4 K-series the manifold has a metal section inside the exhaust manifold, like a thin strip of metal, i presume to aid gas flow??

Does the exhaust manifold have such a section Dave?

Is it a CAT heat shield (no cat jokes please) or heat shield near the fuel tank or gear linkage???

How can MG/Rover develop a car and not know part numbers?

Hi all,

Just a quick line to let you know my local dealer called to let me know they have identified the part number and have ordered the down pipe.

Hopefully this can be fitted later this week....

I will up date this thread with the part number and confirm that this was the problem......

:)
