i have only just become aware that to get my foot on the clutch pedal, my shoe is touching the underside of the plastic shroud on the underside of the dash !!!, in other words the Clutch pedal is a LOT higher that the Brake pedal, is this correct, does this mean i need a new clutch plate soon (only done 34k) or is it adjustable anywhere, if so, how ???. please ...

my motor is a P reg 400 1.4 hatchback.

The clutch is hydraulically operated and self-adjusting.

Not noticed how much higher the clutch pedal is than the brake though.

Someone here might have an idea?

its that high on almost every mk2 400 i've been in. inlcuding mine.
its frustrating and i've tried to find a way around this.
one guy on this forum used to make some kind of a kit that adjusted the position of the pedal 4 cms closer to the floor .
i can't find who he was though as my email account was deleted by some :***: :***:s who didn't know how to unlock it .

other than that the small plastic pump (don't know if its primary or secondary) has a clip that can snap easily an cause the pedal to rise a bit.
you can see that above your gearbox.and another thing is clutch wear. if its on its way out you can get a small diffence on pedal height.

cheers

thanks friend, what sort of "pump" would i be looking for ?, i guess it is hidden under the Air Cleaner !,

i asked a mechanic today to have a look at it, kind of "pick his brains", he had a look under the dash thinking there was a spring broken under there, but that spring looked OK. he then had a look under the bonnet and waggled the clutch lever about a little, the pedal didnt move in response to this.

the car has done a genuine 34K milles, i've had it six months and done about 6k in that time, the biting point is quite low in the pedal travel, the pedal can be pushed down about and inch with a hand, so he came up with the opinion that it was probably all right for wear and he didnt know what else it could be, but then he did admit he wasnt a Rover expert he was more "specialised" in Fords and Commercials . LOL.

so whats this pump thing all about my friend please.

i'll have to show you a pic . its a small plastic pump behind the airbox above the gearbox. It has a plastic retainer clip that can brake or unclip. check this and if its ok then you propably have a normal clutch.

the standards fot the pedal height is 3-4 cms above the break pedal so don't be frustrated. just get used to it.

I think this is normal fare on a 400/II. The crutch pedal on the wheezil is well higher than the brake and it'd had a new clutch before I bought it so wear isn't an issue.
