stevee1953 13-07-2010, 19:32 Hi,guys,i have a 400,1600is saloon Tplate, only had it a few weeks now,my problem is?,parked it up last night, went to start it this morn and (zippo, not a fire from it?)just a good job im on hols for a week, otherwise id have been knackered, but it was raining last night so thought might be damp, stripped off the dizzcap, rotor arm,the dizzy was shot, cant make out why it fired at all with it,so got new cap and rotoarm.put it back confidant it was going to start, zippo again,so plugs out after a good crank of engine, they were dry,,so googled problem after trawling through mg-rover.crankshaft sensor??came up a few times, and dying battery maybe.bought new battery first and tried, walla, few turns and she did fire up albeit stuttering before the car settled down to a steady tickover,,great!!what i need to know through your goodselves,am i missing something here,,can a crank sensor or any other sensor prevent the car from starting???or have i nailed the problem in your opinions.cant afford to get it wrong, cheers guys,,steve
I replaced my inlet manifold gasgit the other week, and reconnected everthing to finish. Went to start the old girl, and like wise, zip. It did splutter a bit at further attempts to start. Anyhow inspecting my reconections I had ommited to reconnect the pipe from the inlet manifold to the ECU. If this pipe/tube were to be perished, difficult starting or splutter symtoms could be relevent.

If you have a distributor you won't have a crank sensor.
:naughtymarsh:
you flooded the engine when you were cranking it over with the knackered dizzy cap and rotor as the injectors were still dumping in extra fuel as it was cold and cranking but not firing building up petrol in the cylinders, even after you refitted the plugs the battery didnt have enough power to supply the starter and coil, now bear in mind fuel loaded plugs need a higher voltage to make the spark gap the gap on the plugs and not track to earth it was never goona start without new plugs or a big zap from the coil which the new battery could give.
i bet the car missfired for about 30 seconds and belched out brown/black smoke until the missfire dissappeared?
stevee1953 14-07-2010, 08:21 Thanx for your answers guys, appreciated,at least i now know i dont have a crank sensor,to worry about,,and your theory of the prob is spot on 2bellys,but when i took plugs out they were( bone dry),which at the time i could only think of fuel starve???,,but anyways, got up this morn and she fired up first shot,These cars sure keep you on your toes:err:,lol.Thank god for this site..cheers
