MG6 right hand drive pre-production car spotted in Hayle, Cornwall; looking good with the full leather interior and generally high spec.

Perfect illustration of how much LARGER it is than the Rover 45!! The 45 was already quite big for that sector.

Looks smart, would have liked to see the interior more though.

Scaffold rear wiper would have to go, or get replaced by a flat blade wiper.

The seat leather inside looked good quality, as did the dash, apart from some plain finished trim panels under the headlight switch; these will be improved for production cars. I was impressed by the look of it, and didn't notice the size comparison with the neighbouring Rover 45 until climbsyke pointed it out.
You might notice the temperature probe in the air outlet on the dash, looks like they're checking climate control performance.

Probably 'cos this is MG-ROVER.org; MG Motor understandably wants to distance itself from all things Rover, it's a dead brand

MG6 will start early next year but the have been making the TF again in small batches since 2008 - I have an early relaunched TF, its 2 years old now:)

Top marks for recording and uploading that...MG are certainly not hiding the fact that's it's a test car are they?

No, I suppose it's good publicity for them. It's certainly got me thinking about getting one. Wonder how it would look in BRG?

Lookin' good. I hope they offer a British Racing Green option because it's not yet been seen in this colour. The shells are probably painted in China (like the current TFs), and they may not decide to offer this colour.

Wow they should seriously make them in that blue and that yellow colour! Looks stunning

I think BRG is dated and old fashioned looking now tbh.

It looks bigger beside the 45 than when you see it in isolation (eg not parked next to a known car at Goodwood).

Suddenly it looks more Vectra/Mondeo than Focus/Astra.

We aren't a car club. There is a lot more overhead in running an official car club than there is a forum.

Is it not meant to be a Mondeo competitor then? No way it's in the Focus category size-wise imo...

The official line (as expounded by Guy Jones) has always been that it's targeting the Focus.

Despite the external dimensions, that's probably wise, as the interior space is more 'Focus like' with relatively constrained rear seats and boot.

It's a bit of a SIDTAR (backward Tardis, bigger on the outside than inside).

True, but over time the 45 dropped down a sector as the competitors got larger. A 45 is already bigger than a Focus, and one of the main problems with the 45 is it didn't really fit into buyers needs for either Escort class or Mondeo class being either too large or too small. The MG6 could well have the same problem.
Add in to the equation that people are going to expect Mondeo levels of quality at Kia levels of pricing and you realise just how hard its going to be for the MG6 to win enough of the buying public to justify anything more than final assembly at Longbridge. Thats very sad and I really hope I'm wrong.

I think you've been misinterpreting that..I believe they were aiming for focus like handling..not a focus size car

having parked my 75 next to the one that was at perkins recently . its about the same length ,though wider and taller.

This mockup is more army green; it's surprising how good the rich metallic BRG can look in the flesh. The new Mini GP looks lovely in green, but maybe that's because it's a retro car. This MG6 is certainly cutting edge design, and maybe the blacks/greys/silvers suit it best.

yes, I know many of us have been in the car and some of us have driven it, and of course it is a far larger car than a Focus (although that car is very wide)...

I used the stats on the new 1.6L EcoBoost Focus as comparison in another thread and was told directly by Windy that the MG6 is a much bigger car then the Focus so that comparison was unfair.

That being the case and having see one in the flesh I too feel the MG6 sits in the Mondeo / Insignia class alongside the Passatt and Audi A4.

It is a deceptively big car and when placed alongside a 75 is noticably bigger than that.

Are you sure you looked at the right car?

The rear seats are comfortable for someone who is 6'4 and the boot is too deep for that same person to comfortably reach fully into its depths!

The MG5 is supposed to be Focus sized, although still noticably bigger than a MK1 Focus.

I'm 6' 2" and I found it a little low, a little lacking in knee room, and quite dark.

MG Motor UK’s Sales and Marketing Director, Guy Jones, says that the MG6 will be pitched as a C/D-segment contender combining a space/interior package close to the D-segment norm with ride and handling benchmarked against the current, C-segment-leading Ford Focus.

In size it lies halfway between Ford’s Focus and Mondeo. Pricing is likely to be crucial. MG Rover once tried to price its Focus-sized Rover 200 up to Mondeo levels on the grounds that it was “premium”. The market guffawed and ignored it. SAIC must not have similar pretensions. Financial Times.

I think when the motoring press get their hands on the UK version we will get the measurements. In fact they are already published in China.

I just cannot see how anyone could find the MG6 "cramped" though a poster is entitled to that view. Someone might ask how it compares with a Lotus...

While his subjective reactions are his alone, I am wondering whether the car Jackonicko tried was badged "500"... or are his cramped, dark car memories actually from a MINI in a tent?

Of course he is entitled to that view, but I have experienced the Goodwood test drive and hill climb route in the rear seat of an MG6 with the front seat pushed back and despite being taller than Jacko, cramped was certanly not my experience. I didn't measure it but it seemed I had about three times the legroom that my ZS has and I think more head room too. The depths of the boot where indeed a bit dark, maybe they could improve the boot lighting?

I saw a 6 driving around Coventry a couple of weeks back. It looked to be Xpower grey and looked very well on it.

I love the looks of it more and more everytime i see one.

As for the size argument, i dont think it will matter that much, its pricing that will be more crucial. The Octavia sits somewhere between a Focus and a Mondeo in size and would seem to be a natural rival to the new MG.

Absolutely! The Octavia is exactly what MG are aiming at - mostly private buyers, well priced, and sized between the focus/mondeo.

Trouble is, most Octavias are diesel. I know there will be a 1.9 diesel in a years time but in the meantime buyers will be comparing the 1.8 turbo economy and emissions with other diesel cars. When the diesel MG6 does arrive it will have a Chinese diesel engine??? Wonder what that will be like...

The 45 was a long car (in saloon form) but inside it was not a match for the ford focus or new astra at the time. When it did almost compete with the family hatches of the day 1995-1998 and the ford escort inparticular, it wasnt pitched against the mondeo anyway which is was woefully inadequate against.

Only the R8 Rover 200 series actually competed in the proper segment and was favourably comperable. Sadly this common sense died the moment they launched the series 3 Rover 200 Series 2 400. Sadly marketing and segment policy went daft and from that point forward Rover werent seen as a serious competitor in any segment.

I accept the MG6 may be larger than the Focus, smaller than the Mondeo, but these days niche segmenting seems to work with the likes of the Skoda Octavia etc.

...and isn't the Octavia based on a Golf with a bigger front and rear overhang?

There's no comparison on interior space between an MG6 and an MG ZS... the 6 is absolutely huge. The spacious interior reminds me in a good way of an 1800 which was actually smaller than a ZS IIRC...

EDIT I note the OP mentioned Cornwall...

Think you guys have hit the nail on the head with the Octavia, I see shed loads of them about, and my dad has got one, so have two of my uncles. and a couple of friends. Alot of them are diesels. But I think everyone is getting a bit "chicken little" about the whole diesel thing. MG are taking things one step at a time. I don't think SAIC are expecting the MG6 to suddenly blow away the Focus and the Golf, and dominate the sector, thus allowing them to restart full scale production at Longbridge.

They seem to be being very patient and very cautious. When they have a bigger range of cars and engines, maybe then we can start comparing them to the Fords and Volkswagens of this world.

But for now lets just wait and see, and give them a chance.
