Hi all, I while ago I purchased this gearbox from ebay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160450638326&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123

Was meant to be having it fitted today along with a new clutch, however when I opened up the wrapping that the gearbox was in today it looks to be a different gearbox to the R65 fitted to my 414! The bloke told me its off of a V reg 416 with around 80k miles on the clock.....he diddnt say it was manual or auto, he said the car had HGF so they were breaking it - so was sure it would have been a k series version with R65! However despite the HGF the gearbox must be from the Honda engined auto box one???

Damn.

Link not working , just type 160450638326 in ebay and you can see the pics.

Not the best quality pic, but the seller did say Manual in the description..
5 SPEED MANUAL GEARBOX
hydraulic clutch type
REMOVED FROM V REG
ROVER 416
IN VERY GOOD WORKING ORDER

Maybe a later type?

If it has provision for a clutch it's not going to be an auto, and it clearly has linkages for the gear selector, an auto has a cable.

If it was from a 416 auto you'd have a major headache and likely the car wouldn't have died due to HGF as the auto was the last of the Rhondas so a hondamatic!

*LINK NOW AMENDED*

It does say manual in the description, it just looks completely different. It doesnt have the circular black plastic cap (breather thing) on top, the linkage thing looks totally different, and the starter motor hole looks to be in the wrong place - still at the front, but higher up.

looks like it could be a honda box, you got any more pictures of it?

Havnt got any pictures at the moment but will take some pictures later when I pick the car up. (I left it outside the garage)

Does anyone else have any pictures or diagrames of other Rover gearboxes?

One thing to add....is it has two little tube/pipes going through the casing of the gearbox to the release bearing/centre part (which has a spring on for some reason) which I think is for the fluid. There is NO clutch lever/arm with a fork type piece to move the release bearing.

do a search on ebay for honda gearboxes, should get a few pictures to compare

Best bet is to type Rover 400 /45 etc gearbox and Honda Gearboxes, in Google and choose Images tab...

Then compare the pictures to the gearbox you have, what you described is what Im used to seeing, the circular cap etc..all my Rovers so far have had this on gearbox.

Any stamps or markings on the casing? It doesn't look like the honda twin cam gearbox.

Doesn't look like an R65 either.

If my money was going on anything it would be from a Rover 75.

Looking at that mount then I think it may well be.

Would agree its likley to be a 75 gearbox
The two pipes coming out would have been for the hydraulic slave cylinder/thrust bearing (all in one unit)which has been removed and thats why there is no clutch arm and fork on this gearbox

That is definately a Getrag 283 manual box out of a 75.
It should have a label on it somewhere like the attached image.

Just had a look and it appears the label has been removed/fallen off at some stage. Can see the paper backing of where a label used to be.

Have had a look at Rover 75 gearboxes on ebay though and I agree with you, deffinatly a getrag Rover 75 box.

Will it fit any 75? I think its an early type judging by the looks of some on ebay, the later ones after around 2003 look to have a slightly different gear linkage part etc.

Dont know what to do with this now, can sell it on on ebay, but I dont know what 75's it will fit, and also if the seller has simply got this box mixed up with a 416 box then I also dont know the mileage, age, or condition of it.

Have you contacted the seller?

I contacted him the other day (when I made this thread) asking him what car it was from as it is differant and wont fit....I asked if it was from a 416 auto. Wasnt rude or anything. Hasnt replied.

From that linkage assy I would say it is from a V6.
The diesel and 1.8 use a different linkage.

The short answer is no , while they are all the same box there are differences as in the starter motor mount position, this was avised to me by TS Autos who worked at MGR for a long time and knows the cars inside out.

Might be worth asking him to have a look at this thread chances are he could tell you what car it fits probably.

they all have different gear ratios as well

I believe it's the final drive ratios that are different across the range from a document I found relating to the getrag box design.

What shall I do then, start a dispute to try and get my money back, leave it be and scrap the box or try and get the information about the gearbox off him and sell it on ebay?

steely

to get a refund through ebay you would have to return it to the seller at your own cost, just a guess but its gong to be more than a first class stamp on a gearbox

As well as different gear cluster assemblies for different ratios.
The different boxes are not the same internally.

I was the Powertrain parts analyst that created all the service parts for these boxes.
