: "MG6 Saloon on sale in July" - MG Motor in MGE
patpending 20-03-2011, 10:09 In the April edition of MG Enthusiast, we read that MG Motor told journos that the MG6 saloon will be at press events in June and on sale in July. Higher spec than hatchback, priced £17k- £20k, still no diesel.
Sales target: 2,000 in 12 months. The factory in its current state could handle 5,000 vehicles [hatch and saloon?] - with extra shifts etc it could handle 40,000. Ultimate capacity: 100,000.
You wait for a new MG saloon for years and two come along at once!
JohnSwitzer 20-03-2011, 20:21 Presumably, the 100,000 figure is with a single track... given that CAB B is sitting idle at the moment, just as it has done since the late 90s and should be capable of just as much again?
Regards
John
traineecollins 20-03-2011, 20:30 Really? The saloon this year? Thats certainly far ahead.
What was the output of MG Rover at Longbridge during its highest peak in modern [last 10-15 years] history?
Give it 4 or 5 years and MG will be needing a replacement lined up for the 6, they are taking so long to get it out, bearing in mind it was initially released about 1-2 years ago now.

I think you'd have to go back further than that.
Nothing much has been happening for the past 6 or more years.

It almost seems, traineecollins, as though you are confusing the need to get the car right for the market with a propensity to wish to flog off any old stuff! ;) The Roewe 550 is getting a facelift!
Rover built more Honda cars from 1989-1995 then they did their own vehicles in 2004, the last full year of production.

That would explain why the wedge 200s and 400s were and still are quite popular. I mean Mk2 25s and 45s are relatively rare.

To be fair, they were only on sale for just over a year or so, so that's not too surprising.
John, 100K is plant total, with CabB in use as well.
Diesel won't be around for 12-18 months yet...
When I said that I meant actual Honda cars for Honda.
Eg. The Concerto.
patpending 20-03-2011, 23:00 That would explain why the wedge 200s and 400s were and still are quite popular. I mean Mk2 25s and 45s are relatively rare.Just go up to a 180 driver and say "cool Civic bro" or to any Rover driver and say "I expect you have a Honda engine". I read what Roverman posted as saying that Longbridge produced more Hondas (Concertos?) in those years than they did MGs and Rovers in 2004...I expect wedge Rover production was far higher...

Production figures for 200/400. 1989-1998 = 953,699.
Production figures for 25/ZR & 45/ZS combined 1999-2005 = 484,929.

I mean compared to the Mk2 MG ZR and ZS, they are a lot rare, especially the MK2 45.
forehead 22-03-2011, 07:35 Is the saloon just a rebadged Roewe 550?
I would have thought in the current climate the diesel engine must be the priority rather than making 2 body shapes with an engine no one will buy.
forehead 22-03-2011, 07:38 Could Ian perhaps tell us what the sales split of Focus Mondeo Insignia or Skoda are in terms of petrol to diesel and which engines are most popular.
I note Freelanders are only available now as 2.2 diesel as the never sold any of the 3L six pots.

Nope it isn't.
Ideally the diesel engine should be here now but diesel engines are not popular for cars in China hence they were not needed for the launch there. For the subsequent launch in UK and Europe diesel is required but rather than buy in some old tat (like MGR did with that awfully unreliable BMW lump) they are designing a totally new engine designed for their cars..the design of which is keeping the Longbridge techies very busy.
So are you saying the launch of the saloon should be delayed? Which is the opposite opinion from the dealers (and the preview customers) who want to get their hands on them. The saloon launch has been brought forward because of demand - a good position to be in I would say

You may have missed all the posts that have mentioned the diesel engine is coming in the next 12- 18 months.......if you did...THE DIESEL ENGINE WILL BE AVAILANLE IN THE NEXT 12 TO 18 MONTHS WHEN MG LAUNCHES INTO MAINLAND EUROPE.
I'm sure in an ideal world the MGs would be available with derv at the start but we are not in an ideal world and worldwide for MG derv has not been a priority...it is now that the product development plan is well progressed..so that they can start building cars for the derv mad UK and europe.
When the diesel engines arrive it will be one of the latest desgins to meet the latest emissions requirements.
forehead 22-03-2011, 20:18 And so UK buyers are stuck with a range of cars though suited to the Chinese Market will sell like a pork chop at a barmitzfa here in the UK.
I'm not suggesting delaying anything but at least give MG a chance with a proper range of UK spec cars not hand me downs from china.
The new Focus will have all the engines in all the colours. It is after all coming from a company the needs world wide sales and not just in the mother country.
MG UK should be given a fair chance and not simply lumbered with the wrong car with the wrong engine at a time when the market is so tough that it will struggle to sell at all

So how other than by delaying next months launch would there be a bigger range of cars then?
Frord didn't go bust like MGR (although very very close)..MG are having to start from scratch. Frord don't even assemble a car in Britain!!!!!
I wish you would give MG a fair chance rather than dis them at every turn on an MG enthusiasts site
ErithMGZR 22-03-2011, 21:57 i think you all need to stop *****ing about it and just get behind the company we all so called enthusiasts have backed before.

And buy one?
No.
john newey 23-03-2011, 20:48 Well, with 35mpg for the petrol and 7 pence per litre (31.8185 pence per gallon for us old uns!!!) more for diesel, who wants a diesel anyway? The MG6 won't be a "rep mobilll" for a while at only 2-3000 units per year. So I reckon petrol is the new diesel!!! Drove it at Prodrive on Monday and the MG6 is awesomeeeeee! Watch this space!

The old uns will also tell you fuel running costs are a very very small part of the running costs of a car...depreciation is always the biggest unless you own a Land Rover of course lol..my last one appreciated!
The news is indeed getting better and better on the new MGs range..they are going to have to find some big dealer showrooms!!
