: Had Test Drive
Just come back from driving a middle spec MG6 in Burnt Orange.
It seems very well put together, drives very sweetly, and as far as I could tell, it handles very well. It's a very decent size, inside and in the boot. It feels solid and is quiet; it goes quite well, but I didn't get the chance to take it on a fast route. Burnt Orange is pretty good - not too bright, and pretty distinctive.
I think the leather seats in the top model would be a great improvement. As I said in another thread, it's £395 extra for metallic paint.
Not much to complain about, except the trade in allowance! We're thinking about it!

Which of the colours are metallic? All of them lol?
White and Red are not metallic. Blue, Burnt Orange, Silver, probably Grey certainly are. Not sure about the Grey, which we are told looks a bit like X-Power. Don't know about Black. Is that the lot??
No BRG!!

Did you take to it straight away? Did you look over your shoulder when you were walking away from it after the drive? That's my acid test.
What sort of character does it have? Sober? Spirited and rev-happy? I'd rather hear from you than from Top Gear next season.

I really hope TG don't slaughter this car. Wouldn't do it justice.
JC from TG so incensed me with his silly appraisal of the original Vectra, that I've NEVER watched the program since.
I used to have a ZS, and the 6 is in roughly in the same segment (it's a bit more spacious), and the new car is lightyears better, as far as I can tell from a rather short drive. The only gripe I have is that the cloth seats look a bit boring - I think the leather ones would improve the interior a lot. The dash board is excellent and the car is very easy to get used to. The handling seems to be super, and whole thing is pretty refined.
Because of where I parked the TF, I couln't look back at the 6!
It's a bit of an odd swop to trade in the X-Type Estate (Diesel), and I'm going to look at a very contrasting car tomorrow - Volvo S60. My son has just got one, and I think it's well nigh perfect, and not a great deal dearer than the top MG6.
I'm absolute MG freak, and it really would be a blast to have three of them! There's also a good case for hanging onto the X-Type.
I'm having fun!
Had a good inspection of the car today and a lengthy chat with an MG Motors guy.
Very impressed with the car and clarified some answers to some questions often posted on here.
Also talked about future MG products including the new MG 3, 5 and 7.

You know you want the MG really haha
My Vectra has been ok over the years on the driving front but shocking on the reliability. Its 4 years old in Aug and it will be gone then and the Astra will be gone in March next year. Also not very relible.
Never thought about the MG 6 till now but it could be the perfect replacment. Only snag is I dont have an MG dealer local to me at the min so would have to travel.
However I might just consider it, as its certainly diffrent.
No matter what TG will slate it as its an MG so its better to slate it then support it.
Went to Mantles in Royston today for first look at MG6. Very impressed. They don't get their demonstator for a few days yet so still need to wait for opportunity of test drive. On first impressions, interior is more spacious than ZT - especially in the back. Doors shut with much better quality feel than my ZT ever has and generally the car looks and feels very solid. This was an SE in blue. It certainly looks like a lot of car for the money and deserves to sell.
Catterall1 16-04-2011, 20:14 It wont be on top gear will it?
I really can't imagine it. They haven't reviewed the normal mondeo, insignia, passat, octavia, focus etc etc only the hot hatch variants.
Benny Dub 16-04-2011, 20:23 the MG guys specifically said they won't let Top Gear have it, as it's not a motoring program.
Could be a bad move; would've been amazing publicity if they liked it, motoring program or not...
I agree though, from my experience in the back seat a couple of weeks ago it's an awesome car :broon:
shaun463 16-04-2011, 20:41 Not really the best of moves - remember what they did to the CityRover? I know it was awful, but if that happens to the MG6, it is doomed.
Based on this, I went and had a look at some other reviews and it certainly seems quite tempting. Any indication on what fuel economy is like?

Which MG guys said this?
It'll be interesting to see if it gets reviewed on Fifth Gear.

The website has...

Top Gear magazine drove the MG6 according to MG, but no review yet.

but was that because of the car or the girl you were sharing the back seat with at the time?

Don't let TG have the car..... worked well with the cityrover.
Southside 17-04-2011, 10:56 Its more than likely Fifth Gear will review it on their show being as Fifth Gear is based in Birmingham

Are you looking at the new S60? I absolutely love the new one - the 2.0-litre D3 engine is a beaut. The V60 would be more of a replacement for the X-Type Estate though, and drives just as well ;)

Yes, the new S60. There are surprisingly good offers around. My son's is the diesel saloon, and it's far better than the X-Type. As I said, I can't see anything wrong with it. My only gripe is that it's another Chinese owned company, and this time with zero UK input.
WE'VE DECIDED ABOUT THE MG6.
It's thanks, but no thanks. Reasons:
Drab interior, even with leather seats in top model.
Had hoped the middle model would do, but no leather, no bluetooth.
Trouble is, you can't order individual options.
The top model is another £2000 which makes the swop cost too much.
Poor PX offered (£1000 less than offered elsewhere).
Unimpressive dealer; yes, they are trying, but we're used to a Jag dealer who provide the best customer service I've ever experienced.
And the very hard thing for me to come to terms with - it's Chinese owned. (Yeh! So is Volvo..............)
So, we'll look at the Volvo which will cost even more, but which is a much a classier vehicle. I suspect it may be too much money, but we'll ask the question.
BUT WE'LL STILL HAVE TWO PROPER MGs.

Ah, I have good news for you there ;)
There is some UK involvement in the Volvo S60, as Ricardo has been involved in the developed of the S60 DRIVe models and I'm pretty sure off the top of my head that they would involved in the development of the 2.0-litre D3 engine too, although I can't find a press release confirming it.

The MG6 will have a better engine line-up next year with the new 1.9 Diesel and the new NLE 2.0 Turbo Petrol.
Interestingly there is also a 2.5L NLE in development which is destined for the new MG7, however I was told yesterday at POL that it does fit in the MG6 engine bay.

No need for an engine bigger than 2.0 . Should be good for 250bhp hopefully.

Just what I was thinking. If you have something to hide MG, they'll find it!

The official figures are an average of 36mpg IIRC...

new MG7? have seen no indication that this might come here. Guy Jones mentioned MG6, MG3, MG5, SUV and sportscar IIRC...

john newey 17-04-2011, 21:25 Appreciate what's beeb said about "Chinese company" but are we not in a global market? I've always thought Volvo a tad dull and boring and the New MG6 is certainly not that-couple that with a superb drive and good value for money, then I know which one I'd go for.

New MG7 interesting car by all accounts. ;)
I suppose if the other models fair well then the 7 will come here.
I expect we will see it in China fairly soon. ;)

Shoddy merchandise deserves to be slated.
If it's a good car then it'll do it a lot of good.
The ZR had a good review from Hammond and that was the base 1.4 model.
They could have really done with reviewing the 180. 4-5 star reviews from most of the media.
