Ive been building this ZR 160 Rally car over the last year or so. Ive posted the progress on a few other forums so thought I would give people on here some info and pictures now.

Comments welcome. Just need a sponser now to get the more expensive parts done.

Well this is how it starts, not been used for 5 months, TAX is gone and still runs good!

 That is one proper random set of build photo's! Looks like everyone's having fun, though, even the dog!

I have to ask, too, what are you building it in? I can see in the background; lots of booze, a server rack (or something similar) and various pallets of "stuff"....

Looks like you work in a warehouse with your mates and decided to do this because you were bored.

Good effort though so far!

Lemme know how much for the seats, where are you located and what condition are they in?

Its a wine and spirit warehouse, that was a while ago now, got much more now. www.finewinesellers.co.uk (http://www.finewinesellers.co.uk) :)

Boot chopping up!

Close but found a neater line to cut after marking it all out with the marker!

Engine bay seam welded and the back suspension removed and checked with some re-taping of components. The sleve on the bottom of the shock had rusted to the bolt, this added about 2 hours to a quick remove and check :(
Shocks will be replaced with coilovers but need these to push the car about on.

After 3 hours of welding here are the results, its been stitch welded in some places so had to put a bit of sealent on in some places to keep the water out. Have to race in wales a lot and the track is always waterlogged.
Some of the pictures look like there is rust all over the place but its just the way the pictures have come out.

We are now in the 6th Year of using a MG ZR for rallying on the MSA National Asphalt Championship.

Was in Group A5 for 1400cc, but this year we have changed to N3 (1800cc). Same car, different engine -ECU etc. The old 1400 is now in the road ZR.

Hope you have a MSA Blue Book handy as it says how to build the car to the correct spec.

And any problems, ask and then I'll pick dads brain.

Both of the doors are chopped up too. Just prepairing the engine bay and welding up any spare holes that i no longer need.

Cheers. I've done rallycross for a few years in a metro gti then a pug 205 gti. I've also got a national a race licence. Have you got any pictures of your car :)

You mean my dads rally car, yes in my intro thread and in the Show Us your cars thread in the 200/25/ZR forum.

Its not my car its my old mans car as my car is a BRM and not a rally car.

Steven Rattue
31-05-2011, 22:33
Lol, yes will be rallycross mostly so will be loose mud/gravel and Tarmac/concrete. Will also do some sprints twice a year. May also take it to the pod. Can't see it being that fast on a 1/4 mile though.

btw, what happened with the leather seats and passenger airbag?

Steven Rattue

Steven Rattue
04-08-2011, 13:30
Just notice ive wacked the screen with the roll cage last night and smashed it :(. I will have to get a lexan margard one that doesnt scratch. I suppose its better that its happened now as glass screens only last 2 or 3 races and hunting for screens and paying for fitting wont be cheap!

Ive got all the cage boxes tacked in at last and just cleaning up for the final welding next week.

Then i have a few weeks of sanding before it gets paint.

It never broke which was good. I did however have a sensor issue so i could only rev to 6000RPM. I had Z and F Racing map the ECU so it would have been nice to have used them all. Handled great though. Nice to have a proper diff compared to stock hatch that im used to racing in.
