: Turbo Reliability?

Is the 600ti or 620ti model unreliable? A search of the interweb seemed to show that it has problems with oil leaks and turbos breaking. Is this rumour or is this model less bullet-proof than the normally-aspirated ones?

One thing I have found with the various 620ti in the family is that they are ALL very reliable and carry their miles very well.

Neglect or poorly maintain any car and you can expect troubles.

Never had a turbo problem with any of mine.

Some plonker on another web site really bad mouthed the 620ti he had bought. Then later in the thread revealed it was an Ebay "Spares or Repair" £199 special ... What a plonker!

I have bought the occasional 'unreliable' 620ti but otherwise nice example. A few hours TLC and voila: a reliable, useful and nice car again. Those unreliable examples I bought were all as a result of professional incompetence by those the owners entrusted to look after the cars. In each case once I had discovered the cause of the problem, i contacted the previous owners advising them to never use that garage again.

If you service it according to the manufucturer's recomended service intervals then you should have no problem at all. The people who don't service their cars are the ones who end up having problems.

If left standard and maintained properly then they are pretty reliable. The weakest parts are the gearbox and the oil leak from the corner of the headgasket (usually a minor weep).

Any turbo can fail , but its a very very rare occasion you hear of one going on a ti , good used ones are pennies anyway

as etv says minor oil leak from the corner of the block was common on all T series but the emphasis is on minor .

listen carefully to the gearbox of any prospective purchase and you ll be ok , andy

ps the normally aspirated T series wasnt fitted to the 600 series range , they used the honda F20Z from their sister accord instead

my 620ti is on 183,000,
its needed gearbox bearings and seals at 150k, new alternator, new clutch and slave cylinders and the normal service item as i've owned mine 6 years and done 60k in it.

the turbo is just a Garrett T25 which is fitted to loads of other brands of cars so no additional worries there. Some do need the wastegate adjusting as they can become loose and give off a metalic rattle which is easily sorted, but i've never know anyone on here have a turbo fail on its own accord.

All T-series engines seem to weep some oil from the headgasket area near the gearbox end, not much which isn't a worry and no internal leaks.
Coolant systems are good on them and robust unlike the K-series, but due to the age of the cars, some do need replacement radiators which leak.

As the others have said find one where the owner hasn't skimped on servicing which often happens with under £1k motors and you have a good motor.

My alternator went straight to hell, so I replaced it. I heard that this came from the turbo getting hot, and the regulator in the alternator did not like it. Is this correct?

Others than that; My turbo still kicks it. '97 model @ ~220k Kilometers.
