:(

Just wondering if anyone can help with this.... ???!!!

Each time I start my car (Rover 214SEi 96 old shape), lets say on a morning, the RPM should be approx 1400-1600 correct me if I'm wrong, and once the engine gets warm it "should" idle at approx 900-950 ???? Well, mine doesn't, it idles between 1200 & 1600, occassionally increasing to 2000rpm! The cars drives fine, no other problems, but as soon as come to a junction and dip the clutch the revs remain high, gradually dropping but not as low as it should. I took it to a garage and the guy adjusted a screw (Sorry not sure which but it was above the throttle adjuster???) and it did drop a little, although not as low as I would like. He said it could be the throttle valve or even worse the ECU !!!! AAAARRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!

Can anyone help me with this....... could it be something really easy????

Any help would be appreciated from you clever guys!

Cheers

Adjusted a little screw???
NOOOOOOO!!!! :cus:
This will not solve the problem. Nothing screwable should be adjusted on the throttle body without being connected to Rover T4 diagnostic equipment. Theres been threads about this before i think.

A trip to rover might be in order. As regards the idle... perhaps a faulty coolant temp sensor, giving false temp readings to the ecu.

Try this also.
1. Turn the ignition on (not starting the car though)
2. Pump the gas pedal 5 times, after which you should hear the stepper motor indexing its self.
3. wait 5 seconds
4. start car.

May help, has fdone for me in the past when i've been fiddling. :D

Cheers for that, I'll give it a shot in a few mins and let you know what happens......

Seen as I'm not that mechanically minded, I just let him loose on the car but got a little worried after 10 mins when he'd been fiddling, that the car was just as bad as ever! Never mind.....!

Had approx. the same issue with the new shape 200.

It had something to do with a sticky throttle control/valve/cable (don't know exactly), something just didn't return completely to the base position.
I don't know exactly where the mechanic adjusted things, but it was a really simple job. It came down to a bit of cleaning and lubricating.

I hope for you it is the same minor defect.
(Mine was clearly injecting fuel into the engine, even when i didn't touched the accelerator pedal and stayed in gear. So had to brake a lot harder to stop, or disengage gear, but then engine would rev up to 2000-3000 rpm. Really small and short hits on the accellerator sometimes stopped the throttle from staying open.)

Adjusting the throttle stop screw is bad news without the use of T4 - but you might be lucky, who knows!

If it continues, get it into a dealership and get the stepper motor adjusted (via this screw) and see what happens. You may have the well-known and documented sticking throttle body syndrome here, too.

It was the first time i had done my 30 mile commute to uni today in months. I was panicing and in a state this morning cause my mk3 214 was idling at 2000 rpm, in fact the car would just pull away if i let the clutch out. Like people have reported a short sharp blast on the throttle caused it to "unstick". Thankfully ive found this post and i can enjoy the 30 miles home without too much worry! Im booking it into my dealer this week!

If you can sort it by a quick sharp 'blip' then it is a sticking throttle body; easily curable at home!
