: Crackling Stereo

Hi Guys, hope you can help with this one.

The radio in my 220 coupe has started crackling, and I don't know where to start when it comes to electrics. It's ok if the engine is off, but turn it on and it crackles, the frequency increasing in line with the revs. At motorway spead its ok (well, I can't hear it due to the noise of the sunroof- I expect it is still there though), but around town it is a right pain.

The stereo is a Philips one (not sure if it's original equipment), but it must be 7 or 8 years old at least. How can I cure the noises, I was thinking of getting a decent stereo anyway to get better reception quality, but is something else causing the interferance.

Cheers,

Ed

Fit a suppressor to the arieal lead.

I believe that the OE head unit has one anyway, so this may have failed.

So presumably a new stereo will sort this out anyway (I'm after a Sony head unit, I presume it will have a suupressor

Not in all cases.

They cost about £2 from your local ice shop and just plug in-line to the arieal lead and head unit.

Best to ask the supplier if it has one.

Another thing that could cause this is a new power source near the speaker leads. Have you changed or added anything recently?

the only thing that I've changed recently is my mobile phone, which can cause interferance when it rings. I shall see what happens if I have the phone turned off.

Thanks for the help

Has it been OK beforehand Eddie?

it was fine before the new phone, but the crackling is intermittant which makes me thing that either there is a loose earth wire, or the stereo is on the blink. I shall have a look at the weekend.

It may be time to sell the car soon, so I don't want to spend too much on it. I'm looking at changing back to an MGB GT, but as I do 14000 miles a year maybe something more reliable is needed.
