: Rover 414 ('97) suspension

Hi,

I have a Rover 414 ('97) with 69K on the clock and I have a problem with the rear suspension.

A while ago I noticed that there was a 1.5cm sag in the rear suspension from left to right (when looking at the back of the car). I have since had the compliance bushes in the trialing arms replaced, and the springs have been replaced and shocks checked. However, the sag remains.

I have measured the length of each spring when stationary and the left side is more compressed than the right (by about 1.5cm). This would suggest that there is more weight in one side of the car!?! (the boot is empty by the way). Do the lateral links effect the height in any way?

Further symtoms are a knocking noise from the rear left hand side (the higher side) when going over small bumbs and the right hand rear tyre is starting to wear on the outer edge.

The car has not been in an accident either.

What can it be?? As I understood it the springs sets the height.

Please point me in the right direction as I am running out of ideas.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The springs are not sided therefore they should be of equal length

I'd put my money on one of the springs (as you have found) to be a little weak, perhaps a small crack?

Dave,

Both the springs have just been replaced and the sag was there before and is there now-thats what is so odd.

What else could it be?
Is there another component of the suspension that can influence height?
Is it one side is sagging or the otherside is too high?

Have you ever heard of this before?

Thanks and sorry for all the questions

Dave,

Thanks for the reply.

I have had both the springs replaced recently and the sag was there before and remains now.

Is there anything else that could cause this problem as it would appear it is not the springs? Can the laterial links affect the height?

Have you ever heard of this before?

Sorry for all the questions

Thanks

Well, I'd expect the springs to be both the same length..

Otherwise, something has to be bent somewhere......it could be anything in the multi-link rear suspension setup :err:
