: MG5 video
Not the best quality video but it has the MG5 being thrashed about a bit which shows it in motion instead of a static picture which is all I've seen until now. I think it looks pretty good, the rear being the bit that concerned me the most in the static pictures looks fine as far as can be made out in the video below. I had the same reservations about the MG6 when I first saw pictures, but then I saw one in the flesh and ended up buying one, so it goes to show that judging a car by a static internet quality picture is never a good idea.
Endure the ad, then skip to 2min 15sec for the car bit.

There's also a video immediately after it of the iVoka system, not sure if that will be in the UK version but it looks nifty.
James Riley 25-06-2012, 20:27 on my 15meg download connection, this took an age to play, frankly I died of boredom before I even saw the car... damn chinese websites..
matthew1kings 26-06-2012, 08:14 Didn't understand some of It. I get the part about the handbrake turns to show off the car but then it skips to a sort of driving lesson obstacle course and then there's some of the mg 5's lined up with bows on them. Did they win them or something?
Anyway it looks like a good car :)

Strange, works fine for me even on my iPhone.
And I have no idea what the whole thing is about but it was interesting to see the MG5 moving about.
ROVER-25X 27-06-2012, 00:45 Its looking good like. :D
Another higher quality video with interior footage as well:

Interior looks nice. Exterior looks nice. Let's hope it drives great though.
And yet another video showing more close up detail:

From what I can make out the MG5 is looking good, it is however a little nose-heavy in it's appearance and looks a little imbalanced because of it, but I think that is easily fixed with some subtle tweaks to even things out and I've no doubt this will happen for the UK.
Yeah it does look quite good, as has been said better in the videos than static images. A little Astra like in the rear, and it does look like a lot of run of the mill hatches from a distance, but then it does need to in order to sell them.
I quite like the interior.
However, they need a better handbrake, or get Russ Swift to do their demos. Some good, cheap marketing - get him to do an attempt on the parrallel parking record again in a 5. If he doesn't want to, I'll do it.

1.5 NASP & Turbo so far
Unlikely
To me it says the UK team have a lot of work to do, the car has a really high stance that looks rather dowdy... get the numberplate moved into the bumper as part of sorting out the hideous rear end and it might look a bit better...
Having just watched the MG3 video from the other section it seems the SAIC designs work well in light colours e.g. white but look awful in black for some reason?
ROVER-25X 30-06-2012, 14:03 1.5 NASP & Turbo so far
I'd have to fit a dump valve with a duck caller lol.
As much as I try I just cannot get beyond the rear end of the car, the initial pictures we saw showed it in a very bad light, but even the later pics and these videos show it to be awkward and clumsy looking. I just hope the UK team get to do something about it before it lands here.
MoonManMike 11-07-2012, 20:42 I'm with gshaw on the high stance. It needs to sit slightly lower and also have slightly bigger wheels. Apart from that, only a few minor tweaks and it could sell in reasonable numbers. I'd even go as far as saying that if I was in the market for that size car, I'd give it serious consideration.

The Uk version will be lowered and have larger wheels

I really look forward to seeing the UK version. I think it will be the pick of the latest MG series :)
ironeagleuk 12-07-2012, 18:29 I am impressed with this.....it looks good.
I know they weren't driving that fast, but it seemed quite poised, with virtually no roll on the back end doing those handbrake turns.
I'd like to have a go myself.
ROVER-25X 12-07-2012, 23:31 Small area though but if it handles like the new Fabia's it will be a tidy motor although I find the fabia to be a bit harsh.

Found this video too, plenty on here on it and the rest of the range.
MoonManMike 20-07-2012, 18:01 The guy is obviously impressed with it. I agreed with much of what he said, but not everything. Some of his comments were quite amusing
:getcoat:
mattykan 20-07-2012, 19:10 Having looked at the video it looks like a good car but it's a shame that the video review doesn't spend a lot of time at looking at probably the car's weakest spot which is the rear.
It they could somehow make the rear bumper not look so huge when looking at it from the rear then they might be on to something.

It kind of reminds me of the Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer estate:

Maybe if they were to move the lights down towards the bumper they might look less big?
The only thing to consider is, would this make a serious Ford Focus/VW Golf rival?
Cheers..
ROVER-25X 22-07-2012, 10:56 Looks like the current Renault Megane too but thats not that bad, there bound to look similar. ;)
lukenobrains 25-07-2012, 17:28 Why is it unlikely they will make a 3dr model?
I need this car in my life but it needs to have but 3 doors!
Because 3 door cars of this type in China aren't very popular apparently.
theorangebandit 25-07-2012, 18:05 but they are re designing for the uk public and 3 doors are very popular with us younguns?

It all costs money though and with little sales in the UK so far it might not be a worthwhile investment.
lukenobrains 25-07-2012, 20:24 I think it will, I know 90% of single squaddies prefer 3dr over 5dr, so if they could make one that is in Astra VXR / Focus ST range I imagine they would sell really well, the patriotic lot we are...
AE and from what's been heard from the grapevine at MG suggest that a hot version is on the way... surely they won't embarass themselves by making it a 5dr...

Guys the MG5 is larger than the ZS. Was there a 3 door ZS? No there wasn't. The 3 door option was the smaller ZR, so if there is likely to be a 3 door out of SAIC MG it will be the ZR sized MG3.
However the ZS "hatch" was never a hatchback in the same way as a Focus etc and would have looked very odd as a 3dr. What's worse with the MG5 is the line of the rear door, looks so dull and utilitarian... far from sporty sadly.
ROVER-25X 05-08-2012, 02:36 The Astra is ZS sized and that came in 3 door. :dunno:
The Astra is ZS sized and that came in 3 door. :dunno:
The Astra is a coupe rather than a 3 door, about 80% of the panels are new, not just a deletion of two doors on the standard bodyshell.
Either way it's a sports model that uses bits from the hatch, whether MG do that or just a staight 3dr conversion isn't much of an issue as long as they offer something that's more exciting than a family-shopping trolley model.

I was just meaning that the Astra itself isn't far off the size of a ZS hatch in general and is available in 3dr. :broon:

Semantics really. Rover Group made both a 3-door hatch and a 2-door coupe out of the basically 5-door R8 Rover 200 (not to mention the cabriolet, 400 saloon and 400 Tourer...).
But they didn't follow suit on its replavement the HHR
Ann MG Writer 08-08-2012, 09:35 But they didn't follow suit on its replavement the HHR
No.... but that was probably partially because Honda didn't want a 3-door version and also because B*W & Rover Group set out to target customers of larger cars like the Mondeo and Audi A4. The new R3 Rover 200 begat the Rover 25 and MG ZR - in both 3 and 5 door versions.
I think the fact that a 5-door Rover 25 could be owned (stereotypically) by 'grand-dad'/'grandma' and his/her grand-son/daughter could own a (typically 3-door) MG ZR and neither party would bat an eyelid about the racial proximity of their steeds is one of the miracles of the MGR era.
