: VW Passat TDi 130
Hi chaps,
I have the possibility of picking up the company Passat as they are trying to sell it.
Not a great price 9k for a 2002 plate with 33k on the clock.
Good nick, couple of small scratches and both nearside alloys are lightly scuffed.
Question is are they any good?
I would guess they should last galactic mileage and be very reliable?
Going from a 214il should be a bit better surely?
It's been serviced ok and the guy that had it was not a test pilot so it's not been thrapped!
Should I go for it or look elsewhere?
Snap it up.
Good solid cars.
Was it a pool car? Different drivers etc all the time?
Not driven the Passat, but if its anything like the Golfs we have at work, they are boring

Not a pool car, one driver from new. He was about mid 40's and wasn't really into cars so I'm pretty sure it's not been thrashed about.
You reckon they are good then?
Might have a look at it tomorrow and take it for a drive. Seems pretty clean too.
Needs new tyres but I might haggle a bit.
I love my 214 but I need a change. Water pump needs changing on mine too. I think I might change the water pump on mine anyway before I sell it as some poor sod will not notice it lose coolant and blow it up.
They ARE good.
Take it for a drive and come back to me.
You'll see why I've been driving a 110 TDi for 5 years ;)
Blington 20-10-2004, 21:14 Yes, the Passats are good. The TDI PD 130 engine is superb. Fast and frugal. I'd snap his hand off at that offer if I were in your situation.
Right ok, I better have a look at it then tomorrow.
I'll let you know how I get on.
Thanks guys.
JohnnyBoy 21-10-2004, 00:36 Yep the PD 130 is a great, torquey engine - i have it in my Ibiza :cloud9: . I have never heard of any reliability issues with it and you can have it remapped to 180bhp if you are that way inclined :devil2:
Well I had a drive of the Passat today.
Very nice drive, bags of torque and very quiet for a diesel once inside the cabin.
6 speed box too.
I was amazed at how much pull it had in the upper gears. Overtaking was just a dab of the throttle.
I shouldn't say it on here but it definately felt better quality than the Rover.
I won't be buying this one though as I had a good look at it in the light and it's got quite a few dents and scratches. Needs 4 new tyres and 3 alloys are badly scuffed. Also a couple of burn marks in the seats.
But it has made me realise that my 214 is not very refined.
I still love the 214 though for it's little revvy engine and it's dirt cheap to run.
But now I feel a search on autotrader for a black tdi with some nice wheels on is in order!
Blington 21-10-2004, 21:08 Glad you liked the car. :) They look very good in shiny black with shiny alloys. You could even look at a 2.5 V6 TDI now. ;)

Now there's a thought!
I do like the look of the black car with nice alloys.
I'll be keeping my eye on autotrader for a bit, see what comes up.
Cheers

Black? Shows the dirt.
Avoid early V6 TDi's - they have unstoppable engine oil leaks......
paul.foran 28-10-2004, 20:08 my mates got an A3 with that engine in(the 130), its got loads of pull. That ESP or whatever its called seems to be a bit of a mare though. Major is yours 110 standard or do I recall you had it superchipped? Wasnt there an issue with injectors on the 110's, Im sure I vaguely remember something about it?
LoudnProud 28-10-2004, 21:26 There is a not very well known secret that passats badges should have read 'PASHAT' because they are boring over rated drivel cars.

In your opinion.
JonathanP 28-10-2004, 21:31 sometimes a car is just a car you know? its not trying to be anything else just there to serve its function
JohnnyBoy 30-10-2004, 16:40 True, but it is being replaced next year! :p
red_rover 31-10-2004, 10:22 There have been problems with the PDI engines, I can't remember what it is was, but most of them should have been sorted under warrenty.
The passat - good build quality, nice restrained good looks, fast engine
Bad points : bland, expensive, over-hyped, 10 year old design, expensive dealers , not an MGR and these fast diesel VAG cars are now getting a B*W repuation.
Its a question about morals and scruples.
Plus, a 75 or ZT are of better quality, a MGR , not quite as fast - but in terms of the ZT much better to drive and in case of the two cars far far comfier.
And the best thing of all - cheaper to buy too.
The Passat TDi is indeed becoming something of a plague on the roads around here. They're always helling it up and down and being driven like they've just robbed a bank.
I think they're what the middle-management feel they have to upgrade to these days :)
It is certainly a nice car though, and well screwed together by all accounts. But like the majority of germanic cars, particularly VAG products, they are totally soul-less and void of character. So it kinda depends what you're looking for.
