: Rover Gearbox Please Help!!!!
RED VITTY 800 23-01-2005, 09:57 Right i have got a rover 820 vittesse its running 12psi,front mount i/c, s/s exhaust, induction kit and dump valve. Its never gonnna have more engine work done too it so here the question.
Ive blown up 3 gearboxes on this car. The one that come with the car lasted me a year, then i brought 2 second hand gearboxes that lasted about a month each.
Now i wanna get a reconbox but should i really bother as i know they are weak? I dont mind paying 400-600 £ maybe a little more but no more really.
Ive got 18's as well. Just want some advice before i end up selling the car, just on advice on wether to get a rebuild? try 620 boxes?? 220 boxes???
Just help please! OR advice on what to upgraded??? Please ?????
Many thanks
Ps yes i know my style of driving WILL have something todo with it but i know rover gearboxes are weak :)
I'm sure someone with the right experience will come along soon and give advice, but these gearboxes are indeed a little weak.
What lube are you using in it?
RED VITTY 800 23-01-2005, 10:37 urm ive never changed the gearbox oil or used any super duper stuff i know this will help but i just wana get un uprated box or ideas or someing. i know the plastic bearing casing break or someing
Steve220 23-01-2005, 20:47 a frequent tendency is for the diff bearings to fail, If you get a box and replace the diff bearings with steel caged items, as well as the input shaft bearing for a new one as well as all the seals, you'll be laughing :) done it on mine, and apart from my own incompetence and not loctiting a bolt in the box that came lose and consequently messed up the re-build (box off again etc), its running sweet :D I wouldn't use a 220 one, as the ratio's would be too long.

Vitesse Sport 23-01-2005, 21:46 Steve has got it all there :)
I have done exactly that and my box is fine :)... it whines a little , but hey they all do!
RED VITTY 800 23-01-2005, 22:57 Oh well thats great advice thanks,i knew what failed but didnt know u could get upgraded parts.
Any chance you give me help on where to get the uprated parts from ? website? address? tel no Anything to help ?
my next door neighbour rebuilds volvo lorry gearboxes so he could help!
So any 1 with a list of what to fit prices etc would be ace???
cheers (much happier damo)
Vitesse Sport 24-01-2005, 06:21 Right, please dont take these numbers as 100% correct but I got a feeling some of them are still used. If i recall they are just out of date, not wrong.
3/MJ28 Input shaft (inboard)
4/MJ28 Input shaft (outboard)
3LRJA25 Counter shaft roller bearing (outboard)
43/LJ25 Counter shaft top bearing
1LLRJ33 Countershaft roller bearing (inboard)
18/6208 x 2 Diff bearings *These are plastic raced!*
A good company to try are GOLDLINE BEARINGS LTD, Stafford Park, 17, Telford, Shropshire, TF3 3DG.
Tel 01952 292401.
This is a recommendation by someone else and I cannot remember if I used them for my rebuild. They might even make you the 'steel raced' bearings for the diff.
Hope this helps. :)
RED VITTY 800 24-01-2005, 08:19 thats great thanks, its a start. ill give them a ring today and c whats what. But were getting there :D
Thanks :D
RED VITTY 800 24-01-2005, 10:36 COULD SOMEONE CONFIRM WHAT ACTUALLY FAILS PLEASE????????
Is it the diff bearings inside the diff? That are plastic cased?
AS THIS IS WHAT IM THINKING OF DOING!!
I reakon im gonna fit a quaife atb diff and then get the box rebuilt. This should be ok shouldnt? Im assuming the weak point is the diff??
Or is this just total overkill for a 220-230 bhp car? should i get these steel caged bearings and get a full rebuild on the box
thanks everyone :D

On the 220 turbos they use a Type A diff which has a habit of shearing off the diff bearing supports, making the diff scrap.
The later 800s and 600ti use the Type B diff which is much stronger, Ive been using them for 3 yrs and have never broke a diff or had diff bearing problems.
Steel cages bearings are stronger but they are noiser and tend to whine a bit.
Dave turbo 24-01-2005, 14:31 I did nearly 100K on the original box in my 220 turbo!!! I sold it still going strong!! :D
2nd boxes, some recons don't last long as they can be abused or cheaply recon'd.
I'd do what Si says and source a later turbo box from an 800/600 as these have roller bearings instead of ball bearings. Plus they have a revised torsion LSD diff.
And make sure the oil is correct and good!!! :D
