: ZS180 strange idle behaviour

Hi Dave
Any ideas on this one ?

When changing gear the revs stay at the same level when I depress the clutch and move up or down a gear?! It happens about 50% of the time. ( been happening for about 1 week)

eg take first gear up to 4000rpm depress clutch to go to second - engine races at 4000rpm - engage second revs drop to normal for second at that speed ?

Also when easing off the accelerator to slow the car without using the brakes you can feel the revs stay up and the car carries on for a few seconds before the revs speed drops and engine braking occurs. Car is 6 month old with 4500miles.

cheers

Tbh, it sounds normal... Modern emissions regulations want to minimise the amount of hydrocarbon content in the exhaust - what your engine management system is trying to do is feed the engine a lot of air during deceleration to keep the hydrocarbon content lower.

It's standard practice in modern production car engine management to ramp open the IACV to keep plenty of air flowing into the engine, making it seem sluggish to slow down when blipping the throttle, and inbetween gear changes...

Get on the throttle sooner after the next gearchange! :P

so its normal for it to idle at 4000rpm for 10 seconds after selecting neutral ?

I think a few seconds is normal, ten seconds certainly isn't.

From what I understand, this is not at all a serious problem,
it is just a sticky throttle valve. Not returning to normal position.

The surroundings just need to be cleaned up and properly lubricated.

My mother's new 214 had exactly the same thing.
Garage fixed it in under 5 minutes on a simple drive-by.
Problem never returned.

Maybe you can check if it is the same thing:
on mother's car, when valve was stuck, a very slighty tapping on the accelerator, could return it to normal position and the revs would drop.

Greets and hope you solve it soon
(because also you're brakes are having a harder time for not being able to brake on the engine, unless you always stay in the +6500 rpm range :wtf: ),

Tom

PS:
I think "idling" at 4000 for 10 seconds is not good for emissions!
Certainly not with a V6 monster.

cheers Tom will check out the throttle valve
