Rover 214 Sli K-Reg .

If you can imagine a seagull (laughing as I call it) then that is the noise I get when applying the brakes. The faster I am in motion the quicker the laughing. I have had the brakes checked and there is nothing wrong with them. The noise seems to come from the NSR, and the Kwik Fit mechanic beleives it might possibly be the trailing bush arm. He says this because he looked at the other side and that one looked as if it was in further than the NSR one. But he cannot say with any certainty that this is what's causing the noise. Has anyone else had the same problem noise. It only happens after a few miles of driving, the more I drive the louder the noise.

many many thanks

COuld be the person who last changed your brake pads didn't bother to put any anti-seize compound on the backs, (not the sides that touch the disc) but the back metal part and the part of the caliper which touches the pads, and the circular shim over the piston, try rubbing some on.

I had the same problem, my brakes made that noise but I am to blame as I couldn't be bothered to buy any anti-seize compound at the time, I done it last week and the noises stopped.

As for the trailing arm bushes I don't think this would be the problem as my bushes are completely shot, just failed my mot on them and my car makes no squeaks at all.

My brakes squeal sometimes because one of the previous owners (or a simple mechanic) , decided that the anti-squeal shims were of no use and disposed of them ! Putting anti-seize compound on helped it a bit .
The trailing arms would only make a squealing sound if you went over a bump/ramp etc , I don't think braking would affect it that much .

Thanks guys for the replies, come daylight I will purchase the compound and try it. The noise isnt quite a squeal. It's difficult to describe it. Only ever happens when brakes are depressed and car is in motion doesnt happen any other times, its more like the sound of the exhaust nudging forward and backward when braking. But I beleive eliminating all possible scenarios and the shims is one I will try to resolve.

Find an empty road and pull the handbrake up slightly, to slow the car. Does the noise come then? If so, it is a rear brake problem..

If it doesn't then I'd suggest it was a front brake problem!
