Firstly, hi to everyone :)

I have a problem with my 418 sd turbo diesel 1994 (m reg)

A couple of nights ago i was driving home, i came around the corner and the engine just stopped.
No coughing or spluttering, all was as normal before stopping.

The engine seems to turn ok, the glow plugs heat up, battery ok.
The timing belt is ok.

I disconnected the fuel pipe and tried turning the engine and no fuel would appear to be coming out, however when i press the primer knob, diesel squirts out ok (the same when i tried syphoning YUK!!)

Has anyone any ideas as to what it could be?
I have had suggestions that it may be the stop solenoid or fuel pump, wherever they are???

It couldnt have happened at a worse time financially so if anyone can give any advice as to what to do or check, it would be wonderful.

Thank~you

The fuel cutoff solenoid is on the top of the main injector pump - it should have awire running to it. This acts like the "ignition" on a petrol car - when you turn the key, the solenoid powers up and fuel flows into the injector pump.

If the wire to the solenoid has come adrift, or the power supply to that wire has failed then the engine dies. Try running +12volts to it direct from the battery - if the car starts then you are at least part way there. However, remember that if you jump 12v diorect to the solenoid, the key won't kill the engine - you will need to remove that wire.

Thanks for the reply Richard :)

I`ve just tried that without success :(

I also tried pumping the primer whist turing the ignition but nothing happens.

It has just been suggested to me to try and take the solenoid off, give it a clean and try a live wire to it to see if it opens or not.

I`ll have to try and borrow a bigger socket before i can do this first though.

did you check the obvious? (loose or blown fuel pump fuse) - I don't have the manual for the peugeot diesel engine, so can't tell you where it is :(

if you're getting no fuel when cranking but are getting fuel when using the primer, it's likely there's a fault somewhere in the fuel pump or it's circuitry.

if you're anywhere near Wigan, I could maybe take a look for you one weekend

Thanks for the kind offer but i`m about 2 hours from wigan (south Cumbria)

I should have said that i have checked all fuses, that was the first thing i did whilst waiting to be towed home.

All pipes seem to be ok.

I`ve just managed to romove the stop solenoid, wired it up and it doesnt appear to be actually doing anything, it has like a small piston and a spring inside but nothing appears to happen when connecting a wire to it.

I`ll have to scramble around the fuel tank tomorrow morning to se if i can find the pump and check the connections and the wiring.

if the piston in the stop valve isn't moving when 12v is applied then you found the fault there, if you have access to a multimeter, you can check for sure by metering the connections if it's open circuit (as I expect if it's not pulling the plunger) you need a replacement

You can pull out the little piston and refit the solenoid and the car should then start. However, again you can't stop it with the key - you will have to operate the "manual shut off" lever on the top of the injector pump.

I did this for a while on my old BX (same engine) because the solenoid quit . it was a pain having to pop the bonnet up to shut down but at least I was mobile. If you have a local scrappy a Peugeot 205/309/405 should oblige (along with some 306/406 models). Then there's the Citroen Visa/BX/ZX and some Xantias.

A new solenoid is no more than about £20 - but as Richard says - most other Peugeot ones will do the job. Just don't pay too much for one!

Well i have just taken the piston out, turned the engine, and hey presto, starts first time.

Thank you very much Richard, Erebos and major ingham for sharing your knowledge and expertise with me.

You have certainly saved me a lot of money that i really cannot afford to spend, our local motor factors say they have some in stock for £15.

:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

THANK~YOU

Exellent stuff - plus thats a great price aswell.

When you fit it, make sure the plunger doesnt fall out......the spring is very small!

I fitted it there and then a few hours ago outside the shop.

The car is running purrrrrrfect now.:)
