NANJING AUTOMOTIVE, owner of the MG Rover and Powertrain assets, is close to announcing its plans for Longbridge.

Doubt remains as to whether China's oldest and state-owned car maker has plans to use the Longbridge plant for assembling MG sports car, or carry-out assembly elsewhere in the W. Midlands.

"We were hoping to make an official statement about Longbridge yesterday," said a spokesman. "We were not able to do that but will be doing so as soon as we are able."

In its statement after the purchase of the MG Rover/Powertrain assets, last Friday, the Chinese company simply referred to 'setting-up a manufacturing and research facility in the West Midlands'. It made no reference to Longbridge in this context.
We understand that representatives of Nanjing has been in contact with property group, St Modwen, which owns much of the 330-acre Longbridge site.

The carmaker could also be sourcing corporate partners to help fund its British development.

Not so. The future of this company is as secure with Nanjing as it is with anyone else.
