: CAMSHAFT TIMING MARKS Rover 200 1.4 k16

All the pictures i see appear to show the 4 marks on the camshafts in a straight line, however when I position my left sprocket Inlet mark next to my right sprocket exhaust mark (both exhaust marks pointing to back of car) aligned with the mark on the rear timing cover the four marks are not in a straight line. Should they be?

Thanks
John

Thanx 4 that but I have already viewed your pictures and threads but my question still remains unanswered.

If I put a straight edge across the camshaft timing marks would all 4 marks (2 exhaust & 2 inlet) be in a straight line when the camshafts are in the correct timing positions?

I ask this because when I try to align mine with the mark on the rear timing case cover the 4 marks are not in a straight line.

No, its just the marks nearest each other you should be interested in. Inlet on inlet cam, exhaust on exhaust cam. These should form a line with the cam centres. Forget the outboard marks.

Thanx 4 that 1955Diesel, Ive got those 2 lined up and the crank at the 90 degrees before top dead centre, but the engine sounds very tappety. It was dead quiet before the belt was removed.Any ideas?
Thanks

You have probably got some air in the tappets. It will clear if you use moderate revs (not too slow) but it can take 10 minutes or so.

Cheers 1955diesel I'll try that. Just rechecked the timing and its spot on but the belt does seem slack as though its trying to jump a notch. I'm not sure if the tensioners working correctly and haynes doesn't show it in any detail.

Not sure what the manual says, but I always turn the engine in order to take all the slack out of the drive side of the belt run, then recheck the timing and retension the belt.

I sometimes give the tensioner a helping hand to take up the tension to an acceptable level - it never seems tight enough with the spring.

Has the engine been standing for any length of time?

As mentioned turn engine manually with socket on crank bolt several times to settle in belt, so to speak, then tension it.

No engine not stood. Changed water pump couple of days back without probs then had prob getting the cambelt back on properly. Sure timing marks r ok and prob lies with tensioner (auto) I've bin slackening it off to get the belt on and dont think its workin right now.

Thanx Ken. Can actually see the belt going slack and trying to jump a notch when I turn the engine by hand. Its an auto tensioner. Timing marks spot on.

I don't think you're tensioning the belt correctly....
