Have I made a balls up?

Basically, I picked up my red ZR on Friday and thought that I would pop out on Saturday morning to give one of the wings a quick T-cut to see how much better the paint would come after a decent polish or cut.

Anyway, the wing that I T-cutted has gone really blotchy and looks much more faded than any other panel??! The buffing mit hting that I used is covered in Red.

Whats going on then?

car must have been painted poorly at some time. good paintwork just wouldnt do that. seems like its just been done, without enough clear coat on. or maybe its been cut that many times in its life, its just worn the clear coat off.
might be worth flatting, and re doing with several coats of clear.

Ok, cheers guys.

There are no signs of a re-spray though.

Is there any chance that the early morning moisture couldve interferred with the process somehow? It was actually quite wet and cold and I just gave it a dry down with a cloth?!

I know, Im not very professional at this haha.

Colour comes off if its been painted in a 2pack finish not base and clear . Any 2 pack finish will do that , I know some of the panels on my yellow one are 2pack as they colour the cloth and others don't !

My wifes old MX5 suffered with that when I polished it for the first time. At first it looked far worse than when I began, but after T-cutting it, I then polished, adding wax coat after wax coat then added about 4 coats of a gloss sealant which brought it back to normal.

Basically it hadnt been looked after bodywise for about 3 - 4 years and it was a 10 year old car at that point.

But it certainly made me worry (crap myself) when I started.

Any time colour comes off you are not dealing with 2-pack / clear over base. It's more likely this is a cheap repair with cellulose only hence no lacquer.

If you were polishing a clear over base you'd only be removing lacquer hence cloth would stay 'clean'

Sorry, I meant to update this.

I dunno if the moist atmosphere the first time I tried had anything to do with it but I tried exactly the same method yesterday which was a nice sunny day and it has come up alot better.

I have found that it takes alot more time and effort to cut a red car but its starting to look better - one panel at a time.
