| You have to subscribe in order post, won't that kill the site? |
Firstly, No, you do not need to subscribe in order to post. Even if you don't subscribe, you can still post, still create new threads and still use the forum in the most basic way.
You can still post questions in Ask the Gurus or discuss MG Rover news in General MG / Rover Related. |
| So, you're turning mg-rover.org into a club? |
No again! MG-Rover.org is not being turned into a club. The subscription is simply a subscription to content, similar to a magazine subscription. I have no desire to turn MG-Rover.org into a full blown club. There is simply no advantage in doing so. We have all the benefits of a club, we can go to events (which we will do more of next year), we can benefit from discounts etc..
There basically is no desire or need for it to turn into a club. |
| But I don't think I'll benefit from the benefits, why should I spent £12 a year just to get a few extra PMs? |
Well, you get more than just a few extra PMs (see here). But seriously, if you don't feel you'll benefit from the subscriptions, then fine - don't subscribe.
I'm not forcing people to subscribe, if you don't feel you'll benefit, you're still more than welcome to stay and contribute to the site. I will NEVER make the site a subscription only affair, where you would have to subscribe to post. That will NEVER happen. |
| So what's to stop you from getting £,000s in from subs and then closing the site? |
Well, the whole idea of the subscriptions is to guarentee the future of the website, if I wanted to close it down I wouldn't have go down the route of subscriptions, I'll have just pulled the plug.
But I haven't put 4 years of my life and gave up a well paid IT job to just jack it in. I set the website up to cater to MG and Rover enthusiasts, to help current and prospective buyers of the cars. I wouldn't do that by closing it, whould I?
As long as there is enough in the kitty to pay the bills for the site, the site will still be here. |
| heh, to me it looks like a nice little earner for you, doesn't hosting cost $80 a year? |
LOL! I wish it did. Yes, you can get hosting from under £10 a year, but as with most things in life, you get what you pay for. The cheap hosting tends to be US based and you're simply crowded onto a shared server with hundreds of other websites.
The costs are explained in this post, but basically the costs for the site's usage of the server are around £500 a month.
To answer the question about a nice little earner, yes there hopefully will be a bit of profit from the subscriptions, but this will go back into extra benefits for the subscribers. Yes I will take a bit of money from the proceeds. What you have to understand is that the site had only just started to pay its way, for 4 years I had shouldered the cost of running the site ( around £180 a month ) myself. However with the loss of income now from the Dealer Network, together with the recent server upgrade I have no choice but to ask you for subscriptions.
However I do not intend to pocket all the profits from the subscriptions as there are alot of areas of the site I want to improve, the money will allow me to invest in the website & the benefits that come along with subscriptions. |
| What happens if I pay the subscription and then sell the car half way through the year, do I get a refund? |
If you subscribe and then choose to sell your car, then its your choice. But no, you will not get a refund. Just like if you join the MG Car Club and then sell your car, you don't get a refund.
Simple answer - don't sell your car ;) |
| So, what extra benefits are you planning, a party would be nice! |
lol, well that is certainly one of the options, a subscriber's Christmas / summer party of some sort.
However, what we need to do is see what the take up of subscriptions is and how much we have left over. Whilst I'd love to say we'd do this and that, without knowing what we have in the kitty, its a tad hard to plan anything. |
| Well, I still think its a nice little earner for you, all those subs fees tax free! |
Actually no. The website has been run under 'Online Enthusiasts Ltd' since 2002. The company was setup to handle the income from the website and this is where the subs fees will be going - into the company, not into my back pocket.
So yes, those worried that I'd end up with a huge tax bill and Inland Revenue investigation - don't worry, it'll be going through the normal company books.
The winner out of this anyway will be the UK Government as I'll have to pay VAT on all the subscriptions :( |
| Email addresses, how will they work? |
Email addresses, how do they work?
Basically when you subscribe, you'll be able to sign up for a free mg-rover.org email address. You'll be able to have anything@mg-rover.org, so i.e. rob@mg-rover.org, burt@mg-rover.org etc..
Contact Steve Childs once you have paid your subscription and are ready to setup you email and he'll set up your account and issue you with an email address.
Naturally, you'll only be able to have it if its not already taken. Access will be via a webmail front end, there will be no POP3 access. |
| I've got another question you haven't answered |
| Simple, either PM me or post it in the website feedback section of the forum, where I or one of the Mods will be happy to answer it. |
| You have to become a supporter just to list an item for sale? |
Not exactly. New for 2007 is a For Sale only subscription, this is a very low cost option which gives you 4 weeks access to the for sale section. You can advertise as many items as you like within that 4 weeks.
Please note, you cannot start a thread and then once the 4 weeks is up then post new items on the end of the existing thread. Doing so will only result in the post being removed and a warning issued. If you think you'll need more than 1 months' access, I'd recommend you take out a 12 month subscription. |
| Can I sell or transfer my supporters donation to another member? |
| No I'm afraid not. Any donations paid remain valid for the member who originally purchased them and cannot be sold or transferred. |
