DAB radio fix NOT solved.

Got a DAB module from a breaker that is breaking a 14 plate 3.

It is located at the bottom rear of the centre console and is a small oblong plastic box made by connects 2, it has one multiway connector and one fakra connector on it.

Plugged replacement one in and hey presto DAB stations are now available.

To get to it is relatively easy, passenger side footwell, pull plastic trim clip out and remove small plastic piece and the box is located there, is has a metal frame around the box and looks like it is bolted in, although I could not feel a screw or nut head so think it may some sort of security bolt that once in has to be drilled out. Getting to the head of the bolt looks like it might be a big job so for now it's plugged in and left loose on top. Rather than having to dismantle half the dash to change it I may see if the cage can be removed and use some velcro and just attach it to the existing box.

As for using a memory stick that still does not work so no idea on that at present. Unless I am doing something wrong with my USB sticks.

In fact for future reference for anyone with the same issue. Think the black box might be able to be removed from the cage and pressed back into the cage in the car, I seem to remember it looking like it had holes on each end that plastic clips clipped into.

Will look into it when I have more time as I didn't have much time today when I tried it. Will update this when I have had chance.

Thanks, an easy fix and cheap at least. Question is why was the original one faulty or do they develop the fault over time.

I'm curious if it is compatible with DAB+ broadcasts?

No idea, even googling the part number brings up nothing, I may see about opening the faulty module up when I get it out of the car and see if I can track down the fault and or find out any info about it.

Dry solder joints in equipment have become endemic since the advent of lead free solder.

Could well be the case it is something that simple. When I get round to taking it out will see about opening it up and having a look, see if it is just dry joints, if it is then I'll have a spare. If not nothing much too lose.

Have to say I am astounded at the clarity and depth of bass the standard set up produces.

Had Absolute 80's on DAB on way home, When Doves cry by Prince and my god, the bass just crazy for standard fit speakers, in fact it made me feel like a boy racer again back in the days when I had a subwoofer and 6x9 speakers in a custom made shelf lol

Not bad to say that the station is broadcast in very low bitrate mono.

Very true but decent DAB reception around me can be better than FM at least it doesn't break up a lot. Not too mention I can now listen to absolute 80's and 90's when I want to in the car which I couldn't do before.

Well I managed to prise the old unit out of it's cage without any real damage, and managed to slot the new one in to it so at least it's not just dangling around now.

The old one has some awful looking solder joints so will get a new soldering iron at some point and have a go and see what happens.

Update, I finally got round to resoldering all the joints and testing the faulty module, again it still would not find any stations.

Having said that as in another post the DAB radio has recently become shocking and in decent weather where you would expect the signal to be better.

Disappointed to say the stock stereo/DAB/USB seems to be shocking in the 3.

Having had DAB working after replacing the Black box for the DAB, it now doesn't work at all, no DAB menus at all on the radio.

I have checked the fuse that is supposed to power the DAB but it also is for the aircon which works and a couple of other things, sadly the manual fuse box diagram is about as useful as diarrhea.

So I have a USB socket that will only charge the phone, will not play music from phone or memory stick, no DAB again, bluetooth audio seems to only work when it feels like it.

And to top it off a strange shaped stereo that the only replacements you can get for it are from China and who knows what the quality of them is like.

The only other option is a faceplate to turn it into a standard single DIN shape to fit an aftermarket radio.

I know the car is a little over 3 years old and out of warranty but you expect the stereo system and extras to work for more than 3 years.

Things like this do take the sheen off the ownership experience.

I am thinking some of the issue may the quality of the head unit, after removing the head unit and disconnecting the power to it completely for a few minutes the DAB is working again. Reception is still rubbish regardless if I am listening to national DAB or Derbyshire DAB.

It really is frustrating.

Question is why does it stop working and then basically a full reset makes it work again?

Hi

Can anyone receive Union Jack or Magic chilled on the Dab radio?

This will confirm if the radios are Dab+; if you can then they are Dab+ and thus future proof.
