Unhappy Cam belt

My sister has the mg3 and she took it for a service, telling them it wouldn't start properly in the mornings! They did the service and told her there was nothing wrong that they could find. 2 months later she has found that the car is pumping out black fumes and is now told that the cam belt has shifted and probably isn't aligned!
Has anyone else had this problem or know what to do? She's only had it 2 years and it's only done 16000 miles!

Sounds like BS to me, first the 3 doesnít have a belt itís a chain and if a chain has failed in this way (which I doubt) after such a short period it would be a warranty claim (3 years from new I believe). More likely it's a sensor or injector failure, if it's pumping out black smoke it indicates an overly rich mixture, this would normally get picked up by the O2 sensor which would turn on the EML light and generate a fault code.

If the garage can't tell the difference between a belt and a chain Iíd consider going elsewhere.

They are correct. Although it is a chain, it has jumped a tooth. Not an uncommon event on some makes of cars given how small the teeth and links are. There is an issue with the tensioner. It has been known to happen on at least 4 or 5 to my knowledge, including my wife's 3 at 2 years old and 22k miles. It is a warranty claim, do not let the garage or MG try to make her pay. In some cases, it has meant a new engine. Usually though, sluggish starting and lack of power accompanied by a ticking sound under low load.

With this and then rust bubbles in the metal above the windscreen, our 3 has now gone. Won't be buying anymore MGs.
