I just popped down to my local Toomeys (a huge dealership with several manufacturers in ESSEX) and had a look at the MG6 Magnette in black. It looks great but power is not in abundance.
There are some good deals going on at the moment for it but before I seriously bother, I need your thoughts. Can this realistically be tuned? By realistic I mean i'm not going to have to research or develop tech to do this myself. Could this thing hit the 200bhp mark which is my minimum for my next car.
Im almost certain that a remap would see 180bhp, even the old 1.8 k turbo would remap to that. there is probably a bit more to be had from the '6 but it's an unknown quantity at the moment, nobody really knows.
Why on earth would you even think along these lines.
If the car survives without self destructing, it would indeed already be a bonus!
These were brilliant engines, but not very durable, sadly. One can only hope the Chinese have got it right, but that is just a hope.
They will, of course, eventually, unless they decide to bin it.
I don't really want to argue with you, but I would call the 1.8T engine "fragile" at best.
Sure, you can maybe haul 400 hp out of it for a race, but the fact is that each and every car, almost without fail, ended up with HGF.
But, let me not stop you, I just think that many many engines out there are far more rewarding to tune, and likely to keep going.
I wouldn't even wait for the warrenty to run out, the week after i bought it i'd have it in for a remap. With any forced induction car it's daft not to, the gains are too good!
If something else broke it could easily be reversed, it's only a software update. Although i would deffo have rid of that DPF too!
As the MG6 is only available as a petrol at the moment it has no DPF to remove.
I would rather other people prove the mapping before I blow up my new car. Yes you can remove the mapping as it is software but no doubt the ECU will have some sort if logging so if it blows a head gasket and I take it back to MG they will know it has been tinkered with. also tbh the only time I would want the extra power is doing track days which I won't do until the warranty has expired.
Sorry, that's me getting myself mixed up - i was posting in the MG6 diesel thread too!
I guess different people have different priorities, i use all the power on the road on a day-to-day basis. The car rarely gets run without some full-throttle usage.
Who knows regarding the logging etc - your guess is as good as mine. Fingers crossed the engines are nice tough little units though!
I will be watching various forums etc and if I start seeing some success stories I may consider it earlier but I will not be a Beta tester for it with the money I have paid for the car.
Mind you still not reached the 900 miles run in yet so not gave it full throttle yet .
I would take it to someone like Sanspeed in Kent and let them have a play sure they could get it singing along 200bhp but yes the warranty would be void if they found out.
Plenty of people out there who can tune the engine it's just who you trust with such a new car. Not sure how much Matt does on the K turbo might be worth asking.
Probably not yet... wasn't aware they have actually done so at some point!
