MG GS Excite vs Suzuki Vitara

MG GS vs Suzuki Vitara SZ-T

The contenders

MG GS 1.5 Excite

List price £17,495

Target Price £17,067

MG jumps on the SUV bandwagon with its all-new GS.

Suzuki Vitara 1.6 SZ-T

List price £16,249

Target Price £15,149

Our current favourite budget SUV is very temptingly priced.

There's no need to rub your eyes, you're not hallucinating. This really is an SUV wearing the famous MG badge. Long gone are the days of MG building sleek sports cars; the now Chinese-owned brand is intent on conquering the big-selling classes. This revolution began with the 6 family hatch in 2010, followed swiftly by the Fiesta-rivalling 3. And now, with the MG GS, it's entering arguably the most fashionable class of them all: small SUVs.

Suzuki has far more experience in building this sort of car. It launched its original Vitara when Whitney Houston was first in the charts, and the latest model, introduced last year, is one of our favourite small SUVs.

Both cars have fairly small petrol engines and front-wheel drive, and we've chosen trims that give you plenty of kit for a very reasonable asking price. So, has MG hit a home run on its first attempt, or will Suzuki's experience prove more valuable as the two go head-to-head?

Having read the test, the GS holds its own, but you don't have to read the article to know the Vitara would win. Still, WhatCar offer a fair and balanced assessment, and I think wen viewed alongside the Vitara, which is a key rival, it looks competitive.

But it's too expensive.

How can you call them SUVs if only 2WD?

Sports utility vehicle, a 4x4 is a 4x4, although some SUV's come in 4 wheel drive, for most people 4 wheel drive is pointless and costs more to run and fix, so unless you really need 4 wheel drive a 2 wheel drive SUV suffices for most people.

Personally I would not call a 4x4 an SUV but maybe that's just me.

Also to add I think the Vitara looks horrid, blands as anything and makes the GS look extremely good looking as an SUV.

Regardless of badge I think the GS would win hands down between a choice of the two.

Most of them look horrid these days. Just look at the new Discovery Sport, looks like its been bashed with the same ugly stick as all the rest. GS included.

Think it's a private joke between car manufacturers as to who can sell the ugliest vehicle. IMO Nissan are winning by a good dstance.

To me the older generation Disco, like the 3.9 in the picture below is pig ugly. The newer generation SUV's including the new GS are much nicer

Car choice is very personal. I think the latest Disco Sport is the best of the bunch.

OLD - Pig Ugly

New - Stylish

They are now. It used to be Fiat, back in the days of the Multipla.

I think Crossover is probably the more correct term, though these are more deserving of a Sport tag than conventional SUVs,

Encouraging that the GS didn't get the mauling that it seems to have received in most other reviews.

Personally, the GS's looks have never appealed to me, but I must admit it looks great in white with the black alloys - although I am a bit of a sucker for black alloys.

It's probably helped too by the fact that the new Vitara is quite awkward-looking, in contrast to the previous Vitara which I always thought looked very tidy.

Except that the Discovery Sport is a replacement for the Freelander

I agree, the Suzuki has a definate Sandero Stepway look to the front end.
